Walter F. Blake, 89

March 29, 2012

Retired Army MSgt. Walter F. Blake, 89, of Dannebrog was greeted in heaven by family and friends Tuesday, March 27, 2012, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be 10 am, Friday, March 30, 2012, at the First Baptist Church Family Center in Dannebrog with the Rev. Barry Arndt officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m., Friday in Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell. Visitation will be Thursday, from 5 - 7 p.m. with a friends and family remembrance service to be held at 7 p.m. at the church.

Dr. Robert Ayres, 70

Dr. Robert Leroy Ayres of Frederick, Md., died Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Marilyn Ayres.
Bom July 4, 1941 in Comstock, Bob was the son of the late Leroy and Nellie Ayres. He graduated high school from Albany Union High in Albany, Ore. He worked several years as a butcher’s assistant, grocery clerk, and heavy equipment operator to earn the money for college.

Dorothy Pollard, 93

Dorothy Drake Pollard, age 93, formerly of Milburn area, died Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Funeral services were Friday, March 23, at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Don Schauda officiating. Burial was in the Moulton Cemetery west of Taylor Memorials may be given to the Dorothy Pollard Memorial Fund. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow was in charge of arrangements.

Berean Ladies to host luncheon Saturday

Jean Hoffman of Battle Creek, Iowa will be the featured speaker during the Broken Bow Berean Church's Ladies Spring Luncheon Saturday, March 31. The luncheon will begin at noon at the Broken Bow Municipal Building. This year's theme is "Walking with Christ" with the theme verse of Isaiah 40:11- "He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently
leads those that have young."

PTA raises thousands for BB schools

The old adage, “it takes a village to raise a child”, has been taken to heart by one group of Broken Bow school district parents. The Broken Bow PTA has come a long way from the Harper Valley days Jeannie C. Riley sang about!
Thanks to the efforts of the Broken Bow PTA, the school district has been able to acquire technology equipment and support programs they may have otherwise not had the ability to do. Throughout just the past few years the group has raised literally thousands of dollars for the schools and spearheaded major projects such as the playground at Custer.

Petition drive works - NDOR agrees to lower speed

Custer County received word early this week that the effort to reduce the speed limit on West Highway 2 coming into Broken Bow was successful.
Nebraska Department of Roads Director Monty Fredrickson sent a letter to the Custer County Commissioners stating that changes will be coming to the section of highway beginning at mile marker 276, west of Grassland Veterinary Hospital. The plan is to reduce the speed limit from 65 mph to 55 mph at that mile marker.

Broken Bow Track Competes at Hastings Invite

The Indians got off to a decent start to their track season at the Hastings Invite on Friday. The mens team finished 5th while the womens team placed 6th.

It was senior Cody Dierking and junior Tanner Briggs highlighting the day for the mens side.
Dierking paced his way to a victory in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:41.24. Briggs came up with a victory in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.16.

Briggs also earned another point for his team with a 6th place finish in the 300 meter hurdles.

Names released in Bow plane crash fatality

March 28, 2012

According to the Custer County SheriffĂ­s Office, the March 28, 2012, plane
crash northwest of the Broken Bow Airport claimed the life of passenger John L Webb, age 48, of Huntsville, Texas. The pilot, Dustin L. Webb, age 33, also of Huntsville survived.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m.

The six-passenger Beech twin engine aircraft is registered out of
Huntsville, and is privately owned. The plane and its occupants were
returning to Texas from North Dakota at the time of the crash.

The FAA has taken over the investigation, so any further questions should

Nationally renowned athlete visits A-M

MERNA - - Students at Anselmo-Merna schools were given a first-hand lesson in overcoming adversity last week. Rohan Murphy was the guest speaker at the school March 23.
Murphy is from Long Island, NY and was the keynote speaker in Kearney for the Nebraska Rural Community Schools Associa-tion conference on the same day. The A-M Wrestling Club contributed to the cost of bringing Mr. Murphy to the school.
