Lorraine Glause, 72

November 9, 2012

Lorraine Saner Glause, 72 of Broken Bow, entered into Heaven Nov. 1, 2012, surrounded by her family. She was born Aug. 27, 1940, in Crawford, to Harley and Laura (Carruth) Saner and was the youngest of seven children.
Lorraine's nickname "Toby" was given to her by her dad at a young age. Lorraine and her family moved to a ranch by Dunning when she was 2-years-old, where she attended country school. Lorraine then attended school in Dunning where she met lifelong friends. During Lorraine's childhood she enjoyed spending time outdoors playing with her cousins.

Clara Ridder, 100

Clara Ann Ridder, age 100 of Kearney, formerly of the Callaway area, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at the North Ridge Assisted Living in Kearney.
Christian wake services were Monday, Nov. 5, with A Mass of Christian Burial Service following at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oconto, with Fr. Antony Thekkekara officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Callaway. Memorials are suggested to the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Callaway. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow was in charge of the arrangements.

Ross Roberts, 78

Ross Roberts, age 78 of Oconto, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the Oconto Community Building in Oconto with R.P. Smith officiating. Burial was in the Oconto Cemetery with military honors. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the Oconto Fire and Rescue.

Therese Keefe, 89

Therese I. Keefe, 89 of Columbus, formerly of Kearney passed away Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at the Golden Living Center in Columbus.
Mrs. Keefe’s wishes were to be cremated. A Celebration of her Life was Nov. 1, 2012, at the Ord Memorial Chapel with Father Mark Maresh officiating. Inurnment will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Catholic Charity. Ord Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Alice Riggs, 90

Alice Christina Riggs, 90, of Grand Island, passed away Oct. 26, 2012, at Lakeview Living Center in Grand Island.
Alice was born Oct. 24, 1922, in Callaway, to Chris and Johanna (Mogensen) Bonde. She grew up in the Callaway area, graduating from high school there. She then attended beautician school in Hastings.

Ruth Babcock, age 96 of Waverly, formerly of Arcadia, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at the Waverly Care Home.

Local communities honor veterans

ANSLEY - students and community are invited to a Veterans Day program Monday, Nov. 12, at 9 a.m. in the high school gym.

ARNOLD - Veterans would like to invite everyone to attend a special program in the school gym Monday, Nov. 12, at 10 a.m.. Special speaker will be State Commander Jim Siedel.

LITCHFIELD - students will host a special program honoring the area’s veterans Monday, Nov. 12, at 10:30 a.m. in the school gym. A dinner for the veterans will follow the program.

Arcadia RFD seeks public support

ARCADIA - - If you feel you have so much stuff that your house feels cramped, just imagine what it would be like if it wasn’t just stuff, but equipment that saves lives and people’s property. That’s the exact problem the Arcadia Volunteer Fire Department and EMS have.
Last Sunday, the Arcadia Fire Department and EMS conducted an open house so that the public could see how cramped they really are and some of the dangers involved. Their hope is that the citizens of Arcadia and the surrounding areas will see the need for a new facility.

NPPD Board approves rate increase

Today, Nebraska Public Power District's Board of Directors approved a 3.75 percent average rate increase for both its wholesale and retail customers that will take effect Jan. 1, 2013. NPPD has been discussing this rate adjustment amount with customers since early this year, and is down slightly from the four percent originally forecasted.

Austrian native gives first hand account of life with Hitler

MERNA - Kitty Werthmann has made it her mission to educate people and set the record straight about what really happened during one of the most important events in history. Last Friday, Kitty brought her presentation to the student body and the public at Anselmo-Merna Public Schools.
The year was 1938 - Kitty was a 12-year-old girl living in her native land of Austria, which was in the midst of a deep economic depression. The unemployment rate in the country had climbed to 30 percent; farmers, banks and small businesses were going broke.
