Commissioners approve Halsey-Purdum road race

THEDFORD - - The Thomas County Commissioners approved a proposal to conduct an open road race on the Halsey-Purdum road at a meeting Dec. 6. Blaine County Commissioners endorsed the event in their November meeting.
The "Loup 2 Loup Open Road Race" will be held Aug. 9, 2012, and is an addition to the 12th annual Sandhills Open Road Challenge scheduled for Aug. 11. A grid of 50 cars will compete in three speed classes with the goal of finishing closest to pre-determined course times.

UNL students create cityscape for Bow

For the past three months, nine UNL landscape architecture students have been studying the community of Broken Bow - the businesses, the residential areas, the parks. Monday evening that group of students presented their final plans to the community consisting of their ideas for improving what we have and creating what we need for community growth and development.

Christmas trees available at Halsey forest

Many of you may recall a scene from the popular movie National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, where the Griswold family goes shopping for the family Christmas tree. While the movie does exaggerate the pitfalls of the experience, many of us are aware from our own experience that this family outing can sometimes be quite a hassle. For those of you searching for the perfect live Christmas tree, the Halsey forest might be just the ticket for that family outing.

CCSO seeks public help finding mailbox vandals

The Custer County Sheriff’s Office is looking for information in three incidents of damaged mail boxes over the weekend of Dec. 10.
Custer County Sheriff Dan Osmond says two of the vandalized mail boxes were located on Ryno Road, and both had been beaten with a deer leg. The deer leg was then left in one of the mail boxes. The other report of a vandalized mail box was on Meyers Road, but it is unclear at this time whether that incident is related to the Ryno Road vandalism.

Thelma Burnett, 89

Thelma Lucille (Elliott) Burnett was born June 6, 1922, at Lillian, in Custer County to James Walter Elliott and Minnie Louise Loffel. She and her brother, Harold, grew up in the Lillian community. Thelma went to grade school at Lillian and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1939; after which she attended Normal Training at Kearney State College to become a teacher. She taught rural schools in Gibbon, Prairie View, and Sunny Dell touching the lives of her students and giving them a firm foundation for learning.

Mae June, 95

Funeral services for Mae Bertha June, age 95 of Anselmo, were Monday, Dec. 12, at Govier Brothers Mortuary. Mae died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, in her home, surrounded by family.
The service was officiated by Don Schauda, with burial in the Merna Cemetery. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow was in charge of arrangements.
Mae was born may 31, 1916, in Wahoo, to William and Matilda (Conrad) Gehrman. She later moved with her family to Pleasant Hill and later Cliff Table in Custer County. In 1940, she married Kenneth June and they moved to Anselmo.

Leola Carlson, 82

December 12, 2011

Leola Carlson age 82, died Dec. 5, 2011, at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island. Memorial services were Saturday, Dec. 10, at Apfel Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Bradenberg officiating. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangement.

Boy gives up birthday presents for needy

An upcoming birthday became an opportunity for giving for one Broken Bow boy and his friends.
Destry Miller recently celebrated his 10th birthday, and as plans were being made for his party his mom made in interesting suggestion to Destry. Knowing he would be getting gifts from his parents, aunts and uncles, his mom suggested Destry donate the gifts he received from his friends to the Children’s Christmas Fund. Destry agreed.

Search begins for new superintendent

The Broken Bow School Board currently has two major issues before them - selecting a new superintendent for the district, and finalizing design plans for the new elementary school project. Both were topics of a special meeting of the board Monday evening.
