Area youth experience mentor hunt

Last weekend, area youth were given the opportunity to learn a variety of outdoor sporting activities from experienced hunters at the Nebraska One Box Complex near Broken Bow. Created in 1996, Pheasants Forever, along with the Nebraska Games and Parks Commission, developed a program, the Youth Mentor Hunt, for kids age 12 to 15 to experience hunting and related activities.

Free Coats!

The Community Connection in Broken Bow is giving away free coats beginning Tuesday, Oct. 18 and ending...well, when the coats run out! Come down to the Community Connection and prepare for the winter season. There is a one-coat-per-person limit. The Community Connection is located on the north side of the Broken Bow Square and is open Monday-Thursday from 10-5:30.

Committee examines sex offender registry rules

LINCOLN -- The Legislature’s Judiciary Committee is examining the effects of a federal statute that has changed Nebraska law on sex offenders, their classification and their presence on national sex offender registries.
The Oct. 11 meeting was held to study the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 and recent changes to Nebraska statutes on sex offender registries.

The Lady Warriors dominated throughout the entire match, showing their talents as they downed the Lady Knights in three straight sets, 25-16, 25-12 and 25-16. They are now 20-1.

Broken Bow sends team to state cross country tournament; A-M sends two runners

The Broken Bow Cross Country team is sending their boys team to the 2011 Nebraska Cross Country Championships in Kearney this Friday. Cody Dierking, Patrick Wright, Andrew Pracht, Evan Rose, Andrew Bailey and Grant Phillips will run for the Indians. The Lady Indians will be sending one runner as well. Freshman Shannon Myers qualified after finishing in the top-10. The Anselmo-Merna Cross Country team will send two runners. Libby Cramer and Blake Yarrington qualified after they both placed in the top-15.

The U.S. Postal Service, in a notice posted in the Oconto Post Office and a form letter to customers, proposes to CLOSE the Oconto Post Office and offer Highway Contract Route Service under the administration of the Callaway Post Office.

Gloria Marie Bartak, age 87, died Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center, Broken Bow.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Evangelical Free Church in Broken Bow. Burial will be in the Cliff Table Cemetery west of Merna. Memorials have been established to the American Caner Society or the Merna FFA Chapter. Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, 8 AM to 8 PM with the family greeting friends 6 PM to 7 PM at Govier Bros. Mortuary.

Ansley, Litchfield announce coop agreement

Due to declining student enrollments and a desire to continue providing quality extra-curricular athletic programs, the Ansley and Litchfield Boards of Education have voted to approve a cooperative agreement involving girls’ and boys’ athletic programs for grades 7-12. Some of the cooperative agreement will be phased in during the existing school year with the start of Junior High Wrestling, Junior High girls’ and boys’ basketball and track along with High School girls’ and boys’ track.

MULLEN--The Lady Broncos were able to upend the Hawks in three sets, 25-22, 26-24 and 25-21.
Mikayla Daniels served for eight points in the first set and led all scorers with 10 points overall.
Rachel Hoesing served for seven points, five that came in the third and final set.
Clara Vinton served for six points, Jessica Lovitt and Amber Wright each recorded five points and Madison Tomlinson tallied four points.
Hoesing played the net well and recorded 16 kills and four ace blocks.
