Broken Bow making tourney noise

GOTHENBURG--The Broken Bow Senior Baseball team played for the B-6 Area Tournament Championship Wednesday night against McCook in Gothenburg. Broken Bow looks to avenge an earlier loss to McCook. Broken Bow beat Gothenburg 9-3 to advance to the championship game.
Broken Bow will need to beat McCook twice to advance to the state tournament in Central City. Full recap and stats will be in next week’s Custer County Chief.
Fourth-seed Broken Bow faced first-seed Gothenburg in the second game of the winner’s bracket and upset Gothenburg 11-4.

Burger & Cruise Night

The Custer County Car Club and Broken Bow Does hosted the annual Chrome and Classic Customs Auto Show Friday in the City Square Park in downtown Broken Bow. Grilled hot dogs and burgers, along with chips, cookies and drinks, were served at the square while people mingled in the park getting a close-up look at some beautiful classic automobiles.

School Board approves bond resolution

July 21, 2011

District 25 voters will get a third opportunity to decide on a bond issue for school improvements on the elementary level.
That was the decision reached by the Broken Bow Board of Education Monday as they approved a bond resolution in the amount of $5.83 million. The vote on the resolution was 5-1, with Haumont voting no. A special poll election will be held Sept. 13, with the final decision being up to the taxpayers.

CALLAWAY - - While many women might tend to shy away from a fix-it or renovation project, Micki Blackburn of Callaway is not one of them. In fact, when she says ‘bring it on’ she means it.
Micki was born and raised in Callaway, and has always maintained a fondness for her hometown. When her father passed away a couple of years ago, she felt the pull even stronger to move back to be close to her family.

Julie A. Koefoot, 57

July 21, 2011

Julie A. Koefoot, 57, of Grand Island, died Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at her home.
Funeral services were July 11, 2011, at St. Leo's Catholic Church with Father Harold Kurtenbach and Father James Schmitt officiating. Interment was in the St. Joseph's Cemetery in Broken Bow. Apfel Funeral Home of Grand Island was in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309.

Ellis R. “Zip” Zeller, 83

July 21, 2011

Ellis Raymond (Zip) Zeller, 83 of Lincoln, died Thursday, July 14, 2011 at home after an unyielding and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born the fourth son of nine siblings Dec. 24, 1928, in Broken Bow, to Ellis Ransom and Gladys (Skinner) Zeller.

Jerold D. Douglass, 86

July 21, 2011

Jerold D. Douglass was born May 13, 1925 at Cushing, the second child of Lawrence and Vera (Cuddeback) Douglass. He attended school in Cushing and St. Paul. He grew up in Nebraska during the Depression with three sisters and four brothers.

Leland Fecht, 79

July 21, 2011

Leland Fecht, age 79 of Berwyn, died Friday, July 15, 2011, at his home near Berwyn. Funeral services were Wednesday, July 20, at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Dennis Davenport officiating. Burial was in the Janesville Cemetery with Military Honors. Memorials have been established to the Leland Fecht Memorial Fund.
Leland Fecht was born Feb. 22, 1932, at Willow Island, to Rudolph G. and Maggie (Shaffer) Fecht. Leland grew up in the Elm Creek area and graduated from Elm Creek High School in 1950.

Cuba Eastwood, 94

July 21, 2011

Cuba Eastwood, age 94, of Callaway, died Friday, July 15, 2011, at the Callaway District Hospital. Celebration of Life Services will be Thursday, July 21, at 10:30 a.m. in the United Methodist Church in Callaway with the Rev. Roger Gillming officiating. Memorials may be given to the Callaway District Hospital.
Cuba Miller (Richards) Eastwood was born Jan. 3, 1917, at Sumner, to Oma and Auzie (Miller) Richards. Cuba was married to Paul Irvin Eastwood.
