Crowd flocks to Arnold housing tour

Saturday, Arnold saw a flurry of activity as more than 100 women converged on the community center for a potluck salad luncheon. The luncheon was the opening to the annual housing tour, sponsored by the Arnold Chamber of Commerce. Those who attended were divided into groups and given directions to each home being showcased. For this year’s event, four families opened their homes to the public, with each bringing their own unique style and history to the table.

Roese makes her mark on the world

There are those who know what they want to do with their lives from an early age, and then there are those who have to take awhile to find themselves. Rebecca Cassel Roese admits she falls in the latter category, but this 30-something mom of three believes she has found her life’s passion.
Rebecca teaches medical classes at College America in Denver, Colo., and this past July was promoted to Associate Dean of the school’s medical program. The fact that she would end up as an instructor surprises even her.

Slys tackles no smoking law, adds on

The blueprints were drawn in March but it took until September to actually break ground. This is in regards to the building of a smoking addition to Slyvester’s Bar in Broken Bow.
Following some contention regarding the statewide smoking-ban, patrons began wondering if a smoker-friendly sector would happen at all.
Fred Schumacher, owner/manager of Slyvester’s Bar, explained that there was a lot of legal requirements and red tape regarding the addition.

Bulldogs to play Howells for D2 state championship Monday

MULLEN -- The Mullen Broncos and Sargent Bulldogs met on the gridiron for the second time this season. This game was not to decide the district champion, this meeting was for a guaranteed chance to play for the Class D2 state championship Monday morning at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.

Ansley finishes 4th in D2, 33-2 overall

GRAND ISLAND -- At noon Saturday, Ansley and Dodge met in the consolation game for third place in the D2 tournament Grand Island Northwest High School.
Dodge got off to a strong start winning the first two sets. In the first set, Dodge, leading 15-14 went on a 5-1 run. The Lady Warriors closed Dodge’s lead to 23-20 before Dodge scored the final two points. The second set nearly mirrored the first. Both teams were tied at 11 before Dodge put together another 5-1 run. Late in the set, Ansley narrowed the Dodge lead to 23-21 before Dodge scored the final two points.

More stars confirmed for Comstock 2011

Last summer Comstock Music Festival organizer Bill Kann promised a bigger and better festival next year - and he is living up to that promise. As we begin to wind down 2010, Kann and his staff have been busy making preparations for a three-festival summer in 2011.
Kann, owner of Up the Creek Promotions LLC and chief executive officer of Comstock Music Festivals, will be bringing three festivals back to Custer County next summer. The country festival is set for June 2-5, rock festival July 7-10 and Godstock Christian festival in August.

Two area teams participated in the quarter finals of the State High School Volleyball tournament Thursday, with one team advancing to the semi-finals and one team seeing their season come to an end.

Kurt Gilmore, 41

November 12, 2010

Kurt A. Gilmore, 41, of Miller, died Nov. 6, 2010, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
He was born Jan. 4, 1969, in Callaway, to George and Dolores (Mason) Gilmore. He grew up and received his education in Merna.
He was married to Renee Lyon June 14, 2003, in Miller. They made their home in Miller. He was self employed and worked as a landscaper.
He lived in various places including Lincoln and Hastings where he worked for Earl May.
He loved the time spent with his family and gardening.

Terry McCandless, 53

Terry Roy McCandless, 53, of Broken Bow, passed away Nov. 1, 2010, at Evanston, Wyo.
Terry was born June 6, 1957, in Callaway to Eldon and Jeannette (Landrey) McCandless. He attended grade school in Arnold and graduated from Anselmo-Merna High School in 1976. Terry lived most of his live in Custer County.
Terry married Brenda Sillivan July 22, 1978, in Sargent. They had two daughters, Kyra and Ginger.
Terry married Barbara Morgan June 29, 2002, in Broken Bow.

Bennie Crouch, 60

Bennie Crouch age 60, of Ansley died Oct. 25, 2010, at Grand Island.
Bennie Orel Crouch was born July 26, 1950, at Broken Bow, the first of four sons born to Harry and Maxine (Coffman) Crouch of Ansley. Bennie grew up in Ansley and attended Ansley Public Schools. He was working at SunHeat in Grand Island, at the time of his passing.
