Jacqueline Scott, 85

April 30, 2015

Jacqueline Imogene Geiser Scott, age 85 years and 4 months, passed away peacefully in her sleep Sunday, April 19, 2015, from heart, kidney and lung problems at St. Luke’s Hospital in Meridian, Idaho.

Jackie was the eldest daughter of Archie Delbert Geiser and Irma Lea Phifer. She was born Dec. 13, 1929, in Arnold. She graduated from Arnold High School in 1949.

After high school she moved to Denver, Colo., to work before returning to Arnold to work as a nurse at the Arnold Hospital.

Nancy Duryea, 83

Nancy Duryea 83 of Merna, died Thursday, April 23, 2015, at the Golden LivingCenter in Broken Bow.

Funeral services for Naomi “Nancy” Duryea were Monday April 27, 2015, at the United Methodist Church in Merna, with the Rev. Andrew Black. 

Burial was in the Merna Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of the arrangements. 

Naomi Doling Duryea was born March 25, 1932, to Sam and Golda Spencer Doling (Busby) in Oklahoma City, Okla. She was one of seven children. Because of health issues the family moved Nancy to a farm between Gentry and Decatur, Ark. 

Shirley Ann DeBusk, 87

Shirley Ann (Woods) DeBusk, 87, of Sargent, died Thursday, April 23, 2015, at Heritage Hall in Broken Bow.

Services were Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent. Pastor Marvin Bauer officiated.

Burial was at Mount Hope Cemetery north of Sargent.

Shirley was born March 7, 1928, in Waco, and was the youngest of six children.

Most of her childhood was spent in Custer County where she graduated from Sargent High School in 1945. She received her teaching certificate from Kearney State Teachers College and taught in the Sargent area.

Dona M. Schipporeit, 88

April 30, 2015

Dona M. (Pollard) Schipporeit, 88, formerly of Broken Bow, died Wednesday, April 22, 2015, surrounded by family at Mother Hull Home in Kearney. 

Dona, and her twin brother, Dale Pollard were born Oct. 10, 1926, at their grandmother Pollard’s home in Thedford, to William and Nellie Pollard. The family lived near Brownlee on a ranch.

At the age of 10, her family moved to Broken Bow. Dona graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1945. 

June 10, 1945, she married Norman Schipporeit of Merna. They lived on a farm near Merna, later moving to Broken Bow. 

Cyruso ‘Cy’ Miller, 94

April 30, 2015

Cyruso “Cy” Miller passed away at the age of 94 Thursday, April 16, 2015, in Lincoln. 

Cy was a farmer, seed-corn sales person and High School Custodian in and around Broken Bow. 

In retirement, he was active in politics and had a small engine repair business in Lincoln.

Cy was preceded in death by his parents; siblings; and his wife, Thelma. 

He is survived by his son, Tom and Teresa; and daughter, Carol and Gary; six grandchildren; and two great-grand-children.

Cy donated his body to anatomical science. 

A private family service will be at a later date.

The Rev. Ardith O. ‘Art’ Ernst, 87

The Rev. Ardith O. ‘Art’ Ernst, 87, of Lincoln, passed away April 22, 2015. Born Sept. 13, 1927 in Adams County, to Orla Edward and Mary Belle (Whitmore) Ernst.

He was a U. S. Air Force Veteran, a Hastings College graduate, Perkins School of Theology at S.M.U. and additional studies at San Francisco Theological Seminary. He was a Ret. United Methodist Church minister. He Served in Inland, Bladen, Scottsbluff, Wauneta, Warren United Methodist Church in Lincoln, Fairbury, Doniphan/Rosedale, Broken Bow (Custer Parish), Norfolk, and Lexington.

Allen Ray “Swede” Spangler, 77

Allen Ray “Swede” Spangler, age 77 of Gretna, passed away Friday, April 24, 2015, at Gretna Community Living Center.

Allen, son of Wilson and Clara (Miller) Spangler, was born Sept. 6, 1937, in Callaway.  He attended elementary school at Redfern District 113 and graduated from Callaway High School in 1955.

He then entered the Marine Corps in San Diego and served in California and Pearl Harbor. He was honorably discharged in 1959. 

When he returned home, he worked with his father on the family farm in Custer County south of Callaway. 

Alan Brock Dailey, 54

Alan Brock Dailey, 54, of Arnold, completed life’s journey April 24, 2015, at Great Plains Health. He would like to be remembered for the positive impact he made on the world, for fun times and for his relationships with others, not as a loser.

He was born May 9, 1960, in North Platte to Donald Dale and Beverly Jean (Kramer) Dailey the youngest of four boys. Alan graduated from Stapleton High School in 1978.

He was united in marriage to Rebecca “Becky” Lynn (Long) July 26,

Nebraska senators vote to lower pay for high school students

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska is one step closer to paying high school students a lower minimum wage.

Senators voted 30-13 Wednesday to advance a measure by Sen. Laura Ebke of Crete that would create a class of "young student workers," employees under 18 who would continue earning $8 an hour, or 85 percent of the federal minimum, even after Nebraska's minimum increases to $9 in 2016.

Ebke says the measure allows small-town grocers to afford to hire student workers.

Registration underway for Bike Ride Across Nebraska in June

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Registration is underway for the 35th Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska, or BRAN.

This year's ride runs Sunday, June 7, through Saturday, June 13, and spans 410 miles. The ride begins in Wauneta and travels through Cambridge, Eustis, Axtell, Clay Center, Wilber and Syracuse, with Conestoga High School near Murray the final stop.

Proceeds help provide scholarships at Nebraska trade schools, colleges and universities.

Cost is $180 for bicyclists 26 and older and $100 for bicyclists 25 and under.
