The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a lineage-based membership organization for women who are descended from a person involved in United States' independence. The organization has a rich heritage, with some state chapters dating from as early as Oct. 11, 1890.
DAR's motto is "God, Home, and Country." Patriotism and community involvement are a big part of the organization, and this week the local chapter of D.A.R. gave special recognition to a local woman who epitomizes both.
THEDFORD - - The Thomas County Commissioners approved a proposal to conduct an open road race on the Halsey-Purdum road at a meeting Dec. 6. Blaine County Commissioners endorsed the event in their November meeting.
The "Loup 2 Loup Open Road Race" will be held Aug. 9, 2012, and is an addition to the 12th annual Sandhills Open Road Challenge scheduled for Aug. 11. A grid of 50 cars will compete in three speed classes with the goal of finishing closest to pre-determined course times.

For the past three months, nine UNL landscape architecture students have been studying the community of Broken Bow - the businesses, the residential areas, the parks. Monday evening that group of students presented their final plans to the community consisting of their ideas for improving what we have and creating what we need for community growth and development.
Many of you may recall a scene from the popular movie National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, where the Griswold family goes shopping for the family Christmas tree. While the movie does exaggerate the pitfalls of the experience, many of us are aware from our own experience that this family outing can sometimes be quite a hassle. For those of you searching for the perfect live Christmas tree, the Halsey forest might be just the ticket for that family outing.
The Custer County Sheriff’s Office is looking for information in three incidents of damaged mail boxes over the weekend of Dec. 10.
Custer County Sheriff Dan Osmond says two of the vandalized mail boxes were located on Ryno Road, and both had been beaten with a deer leg. The deer leg was then left in one of the mail boxes. The other report of a vandalized mail box was on Meyers Road, but it is unclear at this time whether that incident is related to the Ryno Road vandalism.
