From the classroom to the battlefield

MASON CITY - - While his classmates were playing ball, dating and going to Prom their senior year of high school, Harry Ray Boyles was half a world away - jumping out of airplanes with a gun, and fighting to preserve the freedom of a nation.
He was barely 18-years-old, drafted into the Army while in his final year at Ansley High School. He was inducted Oct. 25, 1944, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Harry completed basic training at Camp Hood, Texas. Life had dealt young Harry blows before, but nothing could have prepared him for what was to come.

Fischer bids for U.S. Senate

State Sen. Deb Fischer of Valentine, Tuesday announced her candidacy for the United States Senate.
“I’m running for the United States Senate to help America regain its economic strength and rebuild its cultural foundations,” Sen. Fischer stated. “America must meet a new generation of challenges by strengthening our economy, balancing our books, and in Nebraska, revitalizing our communities.”

The ribbon cutting has been scheduled, furniture has been ordered, and if you have driven west of town on Highway 2, you have seen the exciting progress that has happened with the vision of Custer Campus finally becoming a reality for Custer County.

If you have been following the news much at all, you are likely aware that the districts in the state of Nebraska, as well as nearly every other state in the union, have changed.
What you may not be fully aware of is the fact that those changes have already gone into effect, and as a result Sen. Deb Fischer is no longer the state representative for Custer County. That is because Custer County is no longer in the 43rd Legislative District; rather, we are now part of the 36th District represented by Sen. John Wightman of Lexington.

Rural Post Offices in danger of closure

Many of Nebraska’s rural Post Offices are in jeopordy - and the communities those Post Offices serve are fighting back.
The U.S. Postal Service is currently conducting studies on the state’s smaller and rural Post Offices to determine the fate of those offices. The Postal Service is calling it “Delivery Unit Optimization”, but community members are calling it absurd.

43rd Army Band to perform FREE concert in Square

The 43rd Army Band of the Nebraska National Guard will be performing at the Town Square in Broken Bow, Sunday, June 26, 2011 at 2 p.m. The 43rd Army Band’s concert will include patriotic selections, marches and popular music performed by the 55 member Concert Band.
This concert also includes performances by the jazz band and the rock combo. This concert is free and open to the public – no admission ticket is required. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Broken Bow High School gym.

It is that time of year again when many individuals look forward to going back to their home towns and reconnecting with old friends and classmates - class reunion time. For alumni of Broken Bow High School that time has long been the July 4th weekend; and while the date hasn't changed, the event's organizers have.

New professional building breaks ground in Broken Bow

Monday was a special day for Chris Pearson and members of his family - the day it was announced his family’s legacy will live on.
Ground was broken on the west edge of Broken Bow in a noon ceremony Monday for the new Lomax Professional Building. The building was designed by Chris, initially to provide office space for his wife, Becky.
Becky is the owner/operator of Pearson Physical Therapy, PC in Broken Bow. Her office is temporarily located in Deb Bryner’s former embroidery shop on 9th Avenue, pending completion of the new building.
