December 7th
E-mail scams are nothing new, even to residents of Custer County. But a report of a recent scam in which an area resident’s life was threatened has authorities concerned.
Custer County Sheriff Dan Osmond says a report was made to his office from a Custer County woman, who prefers to remain unidentified, of an e-mail she received in which she was told a close friend of hers had hired this individual to kill her.
In the message, the man told the victim his boys had located her and were watching her, and she was not to contact police.
Oklahoma, Kansas, Louisiana, and New Mexico have suffered drought conditions this past year. Oklahoma is the driest on record since the 1930s. Already devastated by an ongoing drought, Texas was hit hard last summer with out of control wildfires that ravaged agriculture and created billions of dollars in economic damage, the worst on record. Called ‘the Summer from Hell’, the state experienced more than 21,000 wildfires that burned through nearly 3.7 million acres.

December 5th
Hunters and landowners are invited to attend a public informational meeting to discuss deer issues, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Meetings are scheduled in each Game and Parks District.
Game and Parks biologists will explain and take questions on a number of topics including deer management, deer damage and depredation permits, anterless harvest, trophy management and diseases. Antelope and elk issues also may be discussed.
Broken Bow's meeting will be at Mid-Plains Community (2520 South E Street) Dec. 8 beginning at 7 p.m.
December 4th
The Broken Bow School Board has a special work session/board meeting planned for Monday, Dec. 5, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Board Room at Broken Bow High School. The selection process for a new superintendent and the roof concept for North Park Elementary are included on the agenda.
Community and staff input is currently being sought as the Broken Bow School Board begins its search for a new superintendent. The Nebraska Association of School Boards has been contracted to help with the procedure. The position will begin July 1, 2012.
The Custer County Foundation celebrated its seventh annual gala and auction Saturday evening with over 300 people participating in the evening's festivities. A ‘Heads & Tails’ competition added to the fun, and proved to be one of the highlights of the evening. Raffle winners included: Cindy Taylor who won the diamond necklace; Rick Nelson, the four-wheeler; Cleo Jacobson, the Nativity and Patti Duryea, $500 cash as the winner of the 'Heads & Tails' competition.
December 2nd
The Arcadia Community Boosters is sponsoring a Christmas Tour of Homes Sunday, Dec. 4. Anyone interested in taking the tour needs to register at the Arcadia Legion Club starting at 1:30 p.m. Snacks will be served at that time. The tour will depart promptly at 2 p.m. and will include stops at the homes of Dick & Margene Bossen, Alvin & Paula Johnson, Bob & Janice Lutz, Rolen & Betty Sell, and Jess & Christy Underwood. Rides will be provided for those who do not wish to drive. The cost of the tour is $10 per person.

Kids from Family Fun Center, and a couple of local day care centers in Broken Bow, got a special treat Friday morning when some reindeer made a pit stop in downtown Broken Bow.
The reindeer, being transported by Phillip Licking of Seneca, were on their way to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Lincoln for a special visit. Their stop in Broken Bow was arranged by Licking's cousin, Dr. Angela Pruden, of Broken Bow.

The Broken Bow Runza Restaurant and Franchisees Kevin and Joyce Richardson have been honored with the 2011 Community Marketing Achievement Award from Runza National.
The award recognizes a store and staff dedicated to making a positive impact in their community. Runza National will make a donation in the store's name to a localnon-profit organization.

After eight months of countless meetings and deliberations, members of the Farmers Cooperative Grain Company in Merna, Nebraska voted to merge with Cooperative Producers, Inc. of Hastings, Nebraska.
The business operations of the two cooperatives will be combined as of Jan. 1, 2012. The board of directors of both cooperatives, unanimously agreeing on the merger, believed both patrons and equity holders alike will benefit from the larger, stronger consolidated cooperative.
