WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) today released the following statement on the anniversary of the Sept., 11, 2001, terrorist attacks:

The Custer County Children's Theater Association was awarded a $2,000 grant from the Custer County Foundation, Inc. to help bring the Missoula Children's Theater to Broken Bow. The Custer County Children's Theater Association has been working hard to facilitate the planning, scheduling and fundraising necessary to make a week-long theater experience available to local children. Be watching for announcements on auditions.
Dorsett Sennett, Foundation Board Member, presented a check to Carrie Homan and Sheree Slagle of the Custer County Children's Theater Association.

Preliminary reports indicate a fire east of Anselmo Thursday burned as much as 1,000 acres of land before finally being contained during the early evening hours.
The fire broke out at around 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon about three miles east of Anselmo on the Victoria Springs Road. Departments from Anselmo, Merna, Sargent, Broken Bow, Callaway, Arnold, Dunning, Brewster, Ansley, Comstock, Taylor, Burwell and the Halsey National Forest, along with two air support planes, responded to the blaze.

PURDUM - - Many area communities and counties are celebrating major anniversaries in 2012, be they Centennial or Quasicentennial (125 years) due in large part to the railroad coming through, but also to the perseverance and courage of those following their dreams of a better life here.
Such were Levi and Elenora Cox, who came from Ohio in 1887, arriving in Blaine County, three miles west of what is now Purdum. Saturday, Sept. 1, the Cox family celebrated their own Quasicentennial, treating family and friends to a great day of food, fun, socializing and reminiscing.

Many people, including a large host of farmers and land owners, benefit from the Middle Loup River, and from being able to access the water. Last week, many of those who benefit from its use gathered for a dedication for the new Sargent Diversion Dam.
The dam has been more than two years in the works. The new dam replaces the one which was destroyed by a flood which occurred June 13, 2010, and will divert water into a canal to provide water to some 5,000 acres downstream.
September 4th
It was a busy Labor Day weekend in Custer County and the surrounding area, capped off with the annual Fall Festival in Arcadia Monday. One of the highlights of the annual event is the crowning of the Fall Festival Queen, and this year's queen is Elizabeth Einspahr.
The 22nd Annual Kite Flight in Callaway was also this past weekend. Be sure and see this week's Custer County Chief for lots of pictures of the Labor Day weekend events, along with local news and sports.

A couple of personnel issues came before the Broken Bow City Council Monday, Aug. 27 - one in open meeting, and one in closed session.
During the open meeting, discussion was had on creating a position in the city for a full-time zoning administrator. For several years the city has had a part-time zoning administrator, a position currently held by Cindy Pearson. This is an appointed position, which would not require an election.
