Day of Prayer is Thursday

All area citizens are encouraged to join together and pray for our community and our country, during National Day of Prayer, Thursday, May 2. The event will be from 6:30 AM – 7:30 AM in the Broken Bow Municipal Auditorium. Continental Breakfast will be served. The National Day of Prayer local event is sponsored by the Broken Bow Ministerial Association, and is open to anyone of any denomination.

Callaway teen battles back

CALLAWAY - - Until a few months ago, Callaway sophomore Bailey Mach was an active high school athlete. She played basketball, and last spring ran the mile for her track team.
In February, Bailey began experiencing weakness in her legs and pain in her feet. She had suffered a concussion in a basketball game in January and doctors thought her symptoms were related to the migraine she endured for several days after her concussion.

CC Sheriff Osmond honored

April 26, 2013

Custer County Sheriff Dan Osmond has been recognized by his peers for a job well done.
During a special reception April 18 at the Jail Standards Convention, Osmond was presented with the “Excellence in Detention Facility Administration” award, one of only two given each year by Nebraska’s Jail Standards Board across the entire state of Nebraska.
Nominations for the award are made by either the person’s boss or employees and then voted on by members of the board.

New hotel/convention center breaks ground

An estimated crowd of 60-70 people gathered Thursday morning at the site of the new Cobblestone Hotel & Suites and Nebraska One Box Convention Center in Broken Bow. Brian Wogernese, co-founder and CEO of Cobblestone, and Jeremy Griesbach, Cobblestone Development, traveled from Michigan to take part in the event.

The new facility will be located on West Highway 2, just east of Trotter's truck stop, and is planned for opening in October 2013.

Brazilian visitors welcomed

In nearly every corner of the world, providing children with the highest quality education is a top priority. There are a number of resources available to help teachers in this quest, including sharing ideas and information with each other. And that resource is not limited by borders.
Just last week a team of four elementary teachers from Brazil visited Broken Bow as part of a Rotary International exchange program. It was the first time any of the four had visited the United States, and all said they were very impressed with our country’s educational system.

Senators debate state aid to schools

April 23, 2013

LINCOLN - A bill that would change the formula for state aid to schools pitted senators representing smaller, mostly rural school districts against those representing larger districts.
Lawmakers began debate Monday on LB 407, introduced by Sen. Kate Sullivan of Cedar Rapids.

The bill would slow the growth rate of state aid to schools to 6.3 percent for the upcoming school year, down from the current projected rate of 10.3 percent. The following year the growth rate would slow further to 5.1 percent.

Stoltenberg named Postmaster of the Year

Michele Stoltenberg, Postmaster of Sargent 68874, was awarded the Nebraska Branch of the National LEAGUE of Postmasters, Postmaster of the Year award Monday, April 15, at their annual state convention in Grand Island. She has been Postmaster in Sargent since July 23, 2005, when she was appointed to the position. Competition on the National level will be held in San Diego, Calif., July 21 – 25, 2013, during the national convention.

Every day, 3-year-old Morgan Kaelin’s life consists of some form of therapy, lots of medications and feedings through a tube in her stomach. Oh - and watching her favorite show, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, on TV.
For the many things in her world that are so out of the ordinary for such a young child, things like getting excited when your favorite cartoon comes on make Morgan seem so . . . ordinary. But her life is anything but ordinary.
