The dream becomes reality

August 13, 2013

A large crowd which included students, parents, grandparents, teachers, school administrators and contractors gathered for the official ribbon cutting and open house of the new North Park Elementary School in Broken Bow Monday afternoon. The administration and school board have worked very hard to keep the children in the forefront of the bond election and construction process, and in keeping with that student representatives were selected for the ribbon cutting ceremony. A delegate from each of the five grades that will be attending North Park was drawn randomly from the class list of names.

Heavy rains flood Bow streets

A severe thunderstorm rolled through Custer County Friday night bringing hail, strong winds and heavy hail - and took many area residents by surprise. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Custer County, but by the time the warning was issued water was already rushing down many of the city's streets. This picture was taken at the intersection of South 5th and South C Streets about 8:50 p.m. Friday. Several cars became stalled trying to make their way through the deep water.

New North Park hosts ribbon cutting, tours today!

•North Park Ribbon Cutting, Open House & Tours: Aug. 12, 4-7 p.m.

•Elementary School Open House: Aug. 15, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

•Business After Hours at North Park: Aug. 16, 5-7 p.m.

Completion of the renovation and addition at the elementary school comes less than two years after voters approved a $5.83 million bond. The project also includes about $200,000 in improvements that were funded solely by community donations through the Little Feet, Big Dreams campaign.

Lions launch new building project

The Broken Bow Lions have a dream. They would like to build a ‘Helping Hands House’, a 28x66 foot building to house the Broken Bow Ministerial Association’s Food Pantry, and to house the furniture and appliances they gather for families in need.
The building would be located on donated land. City variances have been approved, the State Fire Marshall’s office has approved the drawings and a 501c3 has been applied for.
They have raised $19,000 of the estimated $62,000 the project will cost.

Custer County challenge is on

Who has the most beautiful community in Custer County?
Grow Custer Communities, a group spearheaded by Custer Economic Development Corporation, spends time each month focusing on housing issues throughout the county. A recurring theme is that Custer County has some tremendous neighborhoods and properties with potential.
In order to put a spotlight on both, the group, in partnership with the Custer County Chief and KCNI/ KBBN, is issuing a friendly competition to determine who has the most beautiful community in the county.

BREAKING NEWS: Accident leaves Bow woman dead; husband, daughter critical

Conifer, Colo. - A two vehicle accident Thursday, Aug. 1, in Colorado, has claimed the life of a Broken Bow woman, and critically injured her husband and daughter. Charlene Page, 73, was killed in the accident. Her husband, Paul, remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, as does their daughter, Rhonda Rodriguez. The Page's have been very active members of the Broken Bow community for many years, and news of the tragic accident has hit the town hard. Ansley 4-H club takes on fairgrounds project

The Custer County Fair wraps up today with the annual livestock auction, and for many area 4-H kids it has been a very busy and exhausting week. One local group can go home from fair week knowing that their efforts resulted in a nicer looking fairgrounds.
The Ansley Junior Livestock 4-H Club came up with the idea last year to do something to help beautify the fairgrounds. The project the club decided to tackle was barns 5 and 6.

Fair concert draws big crowd

Kristen Kelly and the Casey Donahew Band performed in concert last night (Tuesday) during the Custer County Fair. The country artists had the crowd rocking, even throwing in some classic rock numbers just for fun.

Tonight the fair action continues, with the 25th annual Custer County Fair Races, in front of the grandstand. Featuring go karts, mini sprints, motorcycles and four-wheelers, the races will get underway this evening at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the gate for $10 for grandstand seating for ages 12 and over, $5 for ages 3 and under. Pit passes are $20, regardless of age.

FREE concert youth event today!

Two of the hottest new acts to hit the country music stage will be coming to Broken Bow Tuesday, July 30, to perform live at the Custer County Fair. And area youth are being given a special invitation to get up close and personal with Casey Donahew and Kristen Kelly.
In an exclusive meet-and-greet session, sponsored by Great Plains Communications, students in grades 3-8 will be given access to ask questions, hear personal stories and listen to a few songs by these two artists. The FREE event will begin Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. and will last an hour.

Taylor hangs out the welcome sign for butterflies

TAYLOR - - Did you know that the Village of Taylor is home to one of the only Certified Butterfly Gardens in the area? The Butterfly Garden is located south of the Taylor Visitor Center and surrounds the old jalopy that draws many visitors to stop and explore.
The Butterfly Garden is certified by the North American Butterfly Association and has been certified since 2011. A Butterfly Garden creates an environment for butterflies to thrive in and encourages habitat for pollinators. Three main steps need to be taken in order to create a certified Butterfly Garden.
