Sterling Atkins remembered at sale

Anselmo--Sterling Atkins, a 2012 graduate of Broken Bow High School, recently passed away while attending college in Chadron. He was remembered yesterday (Wednesday) at the Lonesome River Ranch’s annual production sale.

School safety bill hearing is today

LINCOLN – A bill that would give Nebraska public school districts the budget flexibility to improve and install safety measures in school buildings will be heard by the Legislature’s Revenue Committee on Thursday, March 7.

Omaha Sen. Rick Kolowski introduced LB346, which would allow school boards, with a two-thirds majority vote, to levy one cent above the existing $1.05 levy limit to fund school security measures. What form such measures might take will be decided at the local level by each school board, each school district.

Panelists explore causes of gun crime

Panelists at a gun violence discussion at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln agreed that a lack of access to mental health care and family dysfunction are the roots of American gun crime. Point Blank: A Conversation About Gun Violence in America featured seven experts in law enforcement, psychology, constitutional law and policy to address issues involved in gun violence Tuesday, March 5.   

Mullen hosts 6th annual Polar Bear Tank Race

MULLEN - - Only 19 seconds separated 1st and 2nd place at the 6th Annual Polar Bear Tank Race in Mullen Saturday, March 2. The Total Tank Team of Dennis Whitfield, Kyle Whitfield, Tracy Whitefield, and Colby Welton from Bellevue, won 1st place with a winning time of 1 hour, 4 minutes and 46 seconds.

Nebraska’s Miss America exhibit opens in Lincoln

LINCOLN – Teresa Scanlan made history as the first Nebraskan named Miss America in 2011. Now through Sept. 3, her dresses, shoes and jewelry will be displayed at the Nebraska History Museum.

“When people think of Nebraska history, they think of things that are old and dusty,” said Tina Koeppe, exhibition services coordinator at the Nebraska History Museum. “This is definitely not the case.”

Bow Chamber names new director

The Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce has a new executive director. Donnis Bullock of Cozad has accepted the position and beginning March 13 she’ll be on the job.
Her appointment was officially announced Feb. 23 at the Chamber’s Annual Banquet.
She says she is excited about being part of the energy that has contributed to Broken Bow’s growth. Her husband Chip, is the branch manager for Horizon Ag in Custer County.
“I feel like I’ve been an outsider looking in and now I want to be part of that energy,” Donnis (prounced just like Dennis only with an o) said.

26th annual Tour de Nebraska Bicycle Tour is June 19-23

LINCOLN – The 26th annual 5-day Tour de Nebraska bicycle ride will head to beautiful central Nebraska on its 306-mile round trip journey, June 19-23, 2013. Approximately 300 cyclists will leave Doniphan on Wednesday, June 19 and camp overnight in Loup City, Callaway, Holdrege and Blue Hill.
“We are very excited about the route this year—because we will be riding on some quiet roads that wind through some of the most beautiful areas in the state,” according to Susan Larson Rodenburg, who organizes the tour with her husband, Rich.

Committee focuses on guns, drugs, flying lanterns

LINCOLN – Guns, drugs and flying lanterns were among legislative bills debated during the Nebraska Legislature’s Judiciary Committee hearings, Thursday, Feb. 28.
LB390, sponsored by Sen. Mark Christensen of Imperial would remove the Nebraska governor's powers to take guns and ammunition under the Emergency Management Act.
“It’s the times of emergency that you need (guns) the most to protect your own self,” he said.

Probation officers kick off careers in Bow

A/M grad returns home -

Terisa Gilligan doesn’t exactly fit the image most would have of a probation officer. But that does not deter her from doing her job.
The 2006 Anselmo-Merna High School graduate began her duties as probation officer in Custer County in September 2011 - though she says that was not her first career choice.
After high school, Terisa went to McCook Community College where she was a member of the volleyball team. After one year in McCook she transferred to Mid Plains Community College in North Platte, where she earned her associate’s degree.

Discussion heats up concerning housing requests

The Broken Bow Planning Commission was greeted by a host of visitors during their monthly meeting Feb. 22 in the Broken Bow Municipal Building. On the agenda were three separate requests involving plans for multi-family housing within the city.
Up first was Brad Quackenbush, addressing the board in regards to a property he owns at 437 North 12th Street. The structure is currently set up as a duplex, however Quackenbush is in the process of renovating the property and dividing it into three or four units, requiring permission from the commission.
