Tragedy strikes, but dream lives on

November 15, 2013

SARGENT - - Though he never served in the military himself, Dennis Seidel had the utmost respect and admiration for members of the U.S. Armed Forces, and was determined to honor those veterans in a special way in his hometown of Sargent. But he was not able to see that happen.
After his sudden, tragic death in February 2013, friends and loved ones of Dennis Seidel - in particular his girlfriend, Kathy Wilson - have made it their mission to complete the project Dennis was so passionately devoted to for the last years of his life; the Sargent Veterans Memorial.

Council approves utility rate increases - again

November 15, 2013

It was not a popular decision, and one all four council members said they wish they did not have to make, but they did. For the second consecutive year, the Broken Bow City Council unanimously approved a rate hike Tuesday for city water use fees and for city sewer use fees.
The votes on the two ordinances came following lengthy discussion on the issues, led by Water & Sewer Superintendent Darren Marten. Marten explained to the Council that each year the Rural Water Association comes in to and does an overall survey of the community’s utilities and then makes recommendations accordingly.

November 8, 2013

LINCOLN--Only one person stepped forward to testify Thursday on a proposed revision to Nebraska's good-time rules for prisoners.

The Department of Correctional Services held a public hearing at the Lincoln Regional Center seeking comment on the proposal.

Currently, prisoners can shave off time from their sentences if they are well behaved in prison. The state can take away earned good time if a prisoner does something wrong. The proposed changes would double the amount of good time that could be taken away.

When I was 7 years old and the Miss America pageant was on TV, it was a family night to watch. Let’s face it all those women are gorgeous and talented. My friends and I took turns playing 3rd runner up, 2nd runner up, 1st runner up and then Miss America. One of us would do the teary eye walk, of course with the elbow, elbow, wrist, wrist, wave, as the other 3 three would sing ‘There she is Miss America.’
