Benefit concert Tuesday for performing arts center

March 31, 2014

Fundraising efforts continue for a new Performing Arts Center in Broken Bow, with a special concert event scheduled for Tuesday, April 1.
The 7 p.m. concert in the Broken Bow Jr. High Auditorium will feature reVoiced - a five-member male a cappella band. This group has such a passion for helping schools solidify their music programs that it has become a major focus of their time and talents.

Mark your calendar for JMMMC rummage sale

The Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center hospital auxiliary Spring Rummage Sale is set for next week in the Broken Bow Municipal Building.

Bundle Days will be Sunday, April 6, from 1-5 p.m., and Monday, April 7, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be no sales those days.

Sale Days are Tuesday, April 8, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday, April 9, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Thursday, April 10, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Breaking News: Gov. Heineman Vetoes Bill to Ban Mountain Lion Hunting

March 28, 2014

LB 671 would have repealed 2012 legislation that authorized mountain lion hunting in Nebraska by allowing the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to provide permits for hunting mountain lions. Gov. Heineman signed this bill into law in 2012 after it passed in the Legislature with a vote of 49-0.

Gov. Heineman noted in his veto message to State Senators that, "the majority of you supported the enactment of that law."

I am returning LB 671 without my signature and with my objections.

Bruning Issues Consumer Alert: Fake IRS Call Scam Targeting Nebraska

LINCOLN - Attorney General Jon Bruning today issued a consumer alert for Nebraskans to be wary of a phone scam reported by the IRS as the largest of its kind. Victims have reported threats of driver's license suspension, arrest and deportation.

"My office has received 20 reports of this scam since January," said Bruning. "Calls may appear legitimate because the scammer has spoofed an IRS number for caller IDs. And, the caller often knows the last four digits of the victim's Social Security number."

Bow women arrested in toddler's death

An investigation into the November 2013 death of a 20-month old boy has led to the arrest of two Broken Bow women on charges of Second Degree Murder and Child Abuse Leading to the Death of a Child.
