Fire at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow

St. Joseph Catholic Church members gathered in their Parish Hall for Sunday morning Mass July 27, as they did the evening before due to a Saturday morning fire in their Church next door.

Broken Bow Fire and Rescue were called to the Church shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday with reports of smoke bellowing out the front of the church. Mutual Aid was called and then turned back with Broken Bow's Emergency Response teams spending around two hours on scene.

Nebraska soldier killed in Afghanistan

FORT CARSON, Colo. (AP) — Two soldiers based at Fort Carson were killed when their vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense says 30-year-old Staff Sgt. Benjamin G. Prange, of Hickman, Nebraska; and 19-year-old Pfc. Keith M. Williams, of Visalia, California, were killed in Kandahar Province on Thursday. They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson.

The Defense Department did not release any other information.

Nebraska jail first to ax immigration detainers

(AP) — At least one Nebraska jail has stopped honoring federal requests to hold suspected immigrants in jail without a warrant, following the lead of other local entities around the country who say the practice puts them at risk of civil rights lawsuits.

Other Nebraska counties may soon follow suit, thanks in part to a push by civil rights organizations.

Insurers owe Nebraskans more than $1.5M in refunds

(AP) — The federal government says insurers owe Nebraskans more than $1.5 million in refunds because of a provision in the Affordable Care Act.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said Thursday that nearly 16,600 Nebraska residents will be getting refunds, averaging $108 per family.

The law requires insurance companies to spend at least 80 percent of the premiums they collect on medical care and quality improvement or return the difference to consumers and employers.

Stenberg Warns of Misleading Postcards Concerning Unclaimed Property

Postcards stamped on the fronts and backs with the words, Unclaimed Property Notification, are not being sent by the Nebraska State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division, State Treasurer Don Stenberg said today.

The postcards instruct receivers to call a toll-free number and enter personal identification information. The recorded message at the toll-free number instructs receivers to search for unclaimed property at www.unclaimed.org.

Food Bank for the Heartlnad targets rural hunger

Food Bank for the Heartland is partnering with Farm Credit Services of America to host a mobile food pantry in Broken Bow on Tuesday, August 12. More than 5,000 pounds of food will be distributed to individuals and families in need.

The mobile pantry on August 12 will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at Farm Credit Services of America, 535 S. 10th Ave. in Broken Bow. It is being funded by Farm Credit Services of America. Employees from the company will be volunteering. Those who attend the mobile pantry are invited to bring boxes or bags to assist in carrying the food.

The 2014 National High School Rodeo is at Rock Springs, Wyo. and runs from July 13-19. As of now...
