Nebraska man's weapon-use conviction, sentence vacated

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Supreme Court on Friday tossed the conviction and prison sentence of a man accused of shooting into an unoccupied sheriff's cruiser, signaling that prosecutors botched the case by failing to present evidence to support the weapons charge against him and declaring that he could not be tried again.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska's recruiting efforts apparently weren't set back by the coaching transition from Bo Pelini to Mike Riley.

Riley was able to retain most of the players who verbally committed to Pelini's staff, and he ended up unveiling a class of 20 on Wednesday.

Troopers Escape Injury after Shots Fired at Patrol Car

Omaha, Neb.)- Two Nebraska State Patrol troopers escaped injury and two people were taken into custody after shots were fired at their patrol car during an attempted traffic stop in Omaha.

Winter Weather Advisory

A winter weather advisory remains in effect from 10 p.m. this evening until noon Wednesday.

• TIMING - snow is expected to develop across the Panhandle and Western Sandhills late this evening spreading east overnight. the snow will diminish and end by Wednesday afternoon.
• ACCUMLATION - Expect snow accumulations to be from 2-6 inches.
• WIND - North to Northeast winds will increase to 15-25 mph late tonight and continue into Wednesday.
• IMPACTS - The combination of snow and blowing snow will cause travel difficulties across the advisory area.

Opponents push for repeal of Nebraska prairie dog law

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska wildlife advocates and a farmers group asked lawmakers Tuesday to repeal a law designed to limit the spread of black-tailed prairie dogs, a critical native species that some ranchers view as pests.

Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha presented his repeal measure to the Legislature's Agriculture Committee, saying the current law is too vague and runs afoul of property rights.

Nebraska groundwater report says some levels up, some down

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The 2012-2013 drought was still lowering groundwater levels in some parts of Nebraska last year, but a new report also said levels have been rising elsewhere in the state.

In spring 2013 some areas had wells with record declines of almost 25 feet since spring 2012. Several southeast Nebraska wells had declines of five feet.

Bills introduced to strengthen Nebraska breweries

LINCOLN--A state senator wants to give craft breweries in Nebraska tax cuts and retail access, assuming the moves will lead to economic prosperity and tourism opportunities in Nebraska.

Sen. Ken Schilz of Ogallala introduced LB204 and LB486. Each was discussed at a public hearing in front of the General Affairs Committee Monday.
