The power and majesty of Mother Nature continually mystifies us. There are those who make their living trying to predict what she will do next, and those who just enjoy watching her beauty unfold.
Last week both of those sectors came together in central Nebraska, and converged in Broken Bow on Memorial Day. The storm chasing party included a tour group from Colorado, a film crew with the Discovery Channel, and the Weather Channelâs âGreat Tornado Huntâ crew.

COMSTOCK - - Rumors and suspicion have been swirling for the past few weeks surrounding the upcoming Comstock music festivals. Are they going to happen, or arenât they?
This week that question was officially answered, when a press release was issued by the eventâs organizers. According to the press release, Comstock Music Festivals is currently working on some new and exciting things with its festival series. The festivals are under a new management regime which is currently in the process of purchasing the entire plot of land on which the festival resides on.

*Consolidated customers must transition to DISH Network before Aug. 20!
Husker fans are gearing up for a new season and a new conference, and cable television providers to central Nebraska are making sure we donât miss any of the action.
Consolidated Companies has partnered with DISH Network to bring the Big 10 network to their customers. However, customers in Merna, Anselmo, Halsey, Dunning, Thedford and Mullen have until Aug. 20 to make the transition from their current cable to DISH Network, or they will lose their cable all together.

This graduation season was particularly busy for one local family, who had three family members graduate from college within a week Tanya Allen, her daughter, Megan, and her niece, Ann Scott are all three Broken Bow High School alumni, and all received nursing degrees.
Megan is the youngest of the family trio of grads, a 2007 graduate of BBHS. She had taken some college classes while still in high school toward her degree, through Mid Plains Community College. Megan started full time at Central Community College-Kearney in the fall of 2007.

DUNNING - - In April 2009, a group of like-minded individuals in the Dunning/ Halsey area began talking about what they could do to promote their region. The group decided to organize in their effort, and formed the Blaine County Area Community Foundation.
âIt all started with a group of optimistic people to get the ball rolling,â says Christi Hafer of the Foundation.
Next month the BCACF will host an Outdoor Adventure Day, geared to generate funds for the Foundation as well as interest in the area.

Saturday afternoon turned out to be filled with a little more excitement than normal for Joe Cool.
Cool was working cattle that day when he noticed smoke coming from the barn. When the Callaway fire department arrived on the scene, the barn was completely engulfed.
âAn old wooden structure filled with ten to 15 tons of straw bales, there wasnât alot we could do besides contain it and watch it burn,â Callaway Fire Chief Charles Jorgensen stated.

ANSLEY - - June 9-11, three World War II veterans from Custer County will be traveling to Washington, D.C. with the Central Nebraska Hero Flight. One of those veterans is Arleigh Sintek of Ansley.
Sintek will be accompanied by his son, Jim. This will be the first time Sintek has ever flown, and he says he is looking forward to it.
Like many young men of his day, when Arleigh Sintek graduated from high school, college was not his first stop. Rather, it was the military that awaited him - the United States Navy to be exact.

Carol Reichenberg began her teaching career in Broken Bow in 1977. This Friday she will bid a fond farewell to the school that has provided her income and fulfilled her passion for the past 34 years.
Carol is a native of North Platte, and says she knew from the time she was in 7th grade that she one day wanted to be a teacher. When she was in high school she helped as an aid in the special ed classroom, as she was thinking of going into that area. But it didnât take long for her to realize her true passion was elementary kids.

No one understands the sacrifice of the so-called âWar on Terrorâ better than Rob Kugler and his family. December 9, 2007, Robâs brother, Mike Doheny, was killed when an improvised explosive device struck his vehicle in Iraq. For his family, the news of the death of Al Queda leader Osama Bin Laden brought a flood of emotion.

Next month three Custer County World War II veterans will be part of the Hero Flight team from heading to Washington, D.C. For the next three weeks we will profile each of those veterans.
Back in June 2007, Custer County became the first in the state of Nebraska to organize a Hero Flight to take these World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. to see the World War II Memorial. Dick Pierce, of Miller, was on that trip as an escort for his father.
