Community meets for final tribute

It was meant to be the final goodbye - a special celebration of the lives of two special men who impacted a school and a community. Mission accomplished.
It was standing room only Monday evening, as hundreds of students, parents, alumni, friends, family and community members packed into the Broken Bow Municipal Auditorium for a final tribute to Coach Zane Harvey and Coach Anthony Blum, killed in a June 1 traffic accident near Ansley. Hosted by Broken Bow Public Schools, Principal Ken Kujath had promised a “positive” celebration service, and that is exactly what it was.

Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben announce Pioneer Family awards

The Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben and the Nebraska Fair Managers Association along with the Nebraska Farm Bureau announces the 109 honorees from 55 counties for the 2012 Pioneer Farm Family Awards. In order to qualify for this distinction, members of the same family must have owned a partial of land consecutively for at least 100 years.

Stealth Cruiser turns heads in Broken Bow

If one were to look on the road at the right time this past weekend, they might have seen a car unlike any other.

Bob Gifford, the son of Broken Bow resident Bev Kennedy, resides in Spokane, Washington. When Gifford went to visit his mother, she got to see something that took her son five years of hard work to build.

Gifford's "Stealth Cruiser" is modeled after the F1-17 stealth aircraft used by the military. This makes Gifford, a former Air Force officer, feel right at home.

Legion Riders pay tribute to fallen warrior

More than 100 American Legion Riders gathered in Broken Bow this past weekend for the organization's State Romp. Sunday morning, the group held a special tribute at the Broken Bow Cemetery, where they conducted a wreath laying ceremony in honor of Michael Doheny, former Marine killed in Iraq in 2007.

Ansley celebrates 125th birthday!

ANSLEY - - In honor of its 125-year anniversary, Ansley’s annual Muddy Creek Celebration will be bigger and better than ever this year. Activities are planned for June 8 - 12, with a dance and poker tournament kicking things off Friday. The 60-seat maximum poker tournament begins at 7 p.m., while the Brown Daisy Dance for youth entering 7-12 grade will be from 8-12.

Injured students recall accident & coaches impact

They never thought it would happen to them.
Hunter Campbell saw the oncoming pickup truck in their lane headed straight for them. He thought they would be able to swerve out of the way in time. It wasn't long after impact he realized how wrong he was.
"I remember (Zane) Harvey trying to swerve out of the way, but there just wasn't time," Campbell said. "I don't think I blacked out at any point, but once I looked up and saw everyone moaning, I crawled out the back and it was just me and Grayson (Minnick) out there."

Preliminary autopsy results in

Preliminary autopsy results on the drivers of the two vehicles involved in Friday’s head-on collision near Ansley which killed three men, have been received by Custer County Attorney Tami Schendt.
Schendt says the preliminary findings indicate that 70-year-old Albert Sherbeck, of Ansley, died as the result of multiple blunt force trauma due to the accident. However, the report also indicates severe cardiovascular disease which may have been a contributing factor to the accident.

Memories go sky high

An estimated crowd of 300 people met at the Broken Bow High School football field Monday evening in a display of love and support for the two coaches lost last week, and the three student athletes who remain hospitalized with injuries resulting from last Friday's accident.

Services set for Coach Zane Harvey

June 4, 2012

Zane Harvey died June 1, 2012 as a result of a tragic accident while driving a school van filled with the Broken Bow boys basketball team back home from a basketball camp.

Born Jan 8, 1974 in Broken Bow, to Robert and Monica (Scott) Harvey, Zane grew up in Stapleton, and graduated from Stapleton High School in 1992. During high school he spent the summers working on the Diamond Bar Ranch.

Services scheduled for Coach Anthony Blum

Anthony Dale Blum, 24 years of age from Broken Bow, formerly of the Hildreth-Minden area, died Friday, June 1, 2012, as a result of a traffic accident near Ansley. Anthony was born Aug. 8, 1987, in Minden, to Dale and Jane (Schwartz) Blum. He grew up in the Hildreth-Minden area and graduated from Minden High School in 2006. Anthony attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln with a bachelor's degree in business education.
