Gold earned in Omaha - update

Ladies and gentlemen - we have gold. We are half way through the State High School Wrestling finals and central Nebraska has gold.

Grant Clausen of Sumner-Eddyville-Miller took on Zachary Zeleski of Overton and won in hard fought match 3-1 that went into overtime. It was an OT takedown that made the difference. Grant wrestles at 285.

This year the meet started with the 195 pound weight class.

Wyatt Lane, wrestling at D106 for Arcadia Loup City, also takes home gold. He defeated Jacob Calvert of Dundy County-Stratton in the championship match with a 6-5 decision.

State Wrestling Finals in Omaha - Semi results updated

It’s going to be an exciting day at the Centurylink Center in Omaha as the State High School Wrestling comes to a close – by early evening the champs will be crowned, but every contestant should go home a winner. Yesterday’s mat battles resulted in ultimate emotions, sheer joy for the winners and utter disappointment for the losers. All were hard fought.

BBHS to compete at state cheer this weekend in G.I.

The 2014 Nebraska State Cheer and Dance Championships will be at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22.
Class D schools compete Friday, doors open at 5:00 p.m. with the first performance scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Saturday is split into two sessions with classes A & B competing in the morning session (doors open at 7:00 a.m., first performance at 8:00 a.m.) and Classes C1 & C2 competing in the afternoon session (first performance at 3:20 p.m.)

Congressional Art Competition Submissions Due March 2

Washington, D.C.- Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) is encouraging high
school students in Nebraska's Third District to submit their artwork for
the 2014 Congressional Art Competition by March 2, 2014.

"The Congressional Art Competition is a great opportunity for Third
District students to share their talent," said Smith. "I hope we will be
able to build upon the success of previous years and continue to showcase
outstanding works of art in our congressional offices and in the U.S.
Capitol."

The Nebraska Art Teachers Association is working with Smith to coordinate

Day one for Class D from the State High School Wrestling competition

The Championship Round 1 and Quarter Finals for Class D are complete. For Brinnon Schukei (Sandhills/Thedford) and his fans it was a special day – during the first round he hit his 100th career win and a section of the upper balcony wearing the distinctive Sandhills/Thedford green erupted with signs congratulating Brinnon on his accomplishments.

Round 1 and the quarter finals for Classes B & C in the books for the 2014 State High School Wrestling finals in Omaha. Classes A & D start around 4:30 this afternoon. Those who lost in the first round, or in the quarterfinals will have an opportunity to wrestle back tomorrow. Here are the results as they stand, organized by weight class. School offers information on Digital Citizenship

Broken Bow Jr. & Sr. High School has the opportunity to bring in a speaker to educate our students on the importance of digital citizenship. Karen Haase from Harding & Shultz will will give her presentation to 6th-12th grade students, BBPS staff, and to parents on Wednesday, February 19th. Parents and guardians are invited to attend her presentation from 6-7:00PM in the Jr. High Auditorium on Wednesday evening.

BREAKING NEWS: Bain found guilty

February 14, 2014

Almost 24 hours after being handed the case for deliberation, the jury in the trial of Tyler C. Bain, 31, returned a verdict Friday afternoon of guilty on four of the five charges against him. The verdict was read at about 2:35 p.m. today (Friday) as follows:
Count 1, 1st degree sexual assault - Guilty
Count 2, 2nd degree assault - Guilty
Count 3, terroristic threats - Guilty
Count 4 - dismissed prior to trial
Count 5, use of a weapon to commit a felony - Not Guilty
Count 6, kidnapping - Guilty

Bain case handed to the jury

The jury trial for Tyler C. Bain, 31, finally began this week, with jury selection starting Monday morning. It was standing room only as around 70 potential jurors crowded into the Custer County District courtroom. By 12:30 p.m., the jury of nine women and three men, with both a male and female alternate, had been selected. When court reconvened after lunch, each attorney gave their opening statement to the jury.
