Ervin â€śErvâ€ť Mortensen passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Ervin Eugene Mortensen was born Sept. 5, 1935, to Marvin and Grace (Krause) Mortensen on the family farm near Mason City. He attended school in Mason City through the 9th grade, when his fatherâ€™s illness required him to help on the farm.
He entered the U.S. Army Oct. 14, 1958, and served at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., and Ft. Bragg, N.C. Erv also spent nearly 1 1/2 years in Germany before being discharged Sept. 28, 1960, at Ft. Dix, N.J. He remained in the Army Reserve until 1964.
Christopher Floyd Glidden, infant son of Levi and Tiffany Glidden, was born into the arms of God Jan. 5, 2011.
JoAnn (Kaelin) Dramse-Bean, age 71 of St. Maries, Idaho, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, at her home near St. Maries.
Jo, as she was known to most, was born Nov. 7, 1939, at the farm 1 1/2 miles south of Weissert, to George H. and Anna H. (Petersen) Kaelin. She received her early education at the rural grade school East Weissert District 17 and started high school at Westerville.
After three years the Westerville High School closed and she transferred to Ansley, where she graduated witht he class of 1957.
Mrs. Lillian Marie (Duryea) Swick, 96, of Norfolk passed away at her home, Heritage of Bel-Air, Jan. 16, 2011, after a long battle with Alzheimerâ€™s disease.
Lillian was born March 14, 1914, to Isaac and Inger Marie â€śMaryâ€ť (Matson) Duryea. She grew up in Blaine and Custer Counties, graduating from Merna High School in 1930.
June 14, 1936, she married Louis Oliver Swick at the Broken Bow Christian Church parsonage with Pastor W.A. Baldwin officiating. To this union one child was born, Janice Louise Swick.
Robert James (R.J.) Mills was born to Ed and Avis Mills in Ansley, Aug. 8, 1922. R.J. was raised on his parent's farm near Weissert with his younger brothers, Leonard and Gerald. R.J. attended grade school at Weissert. He graduated from Westerville High School in 1940.
Wayne LeRoy Hirsch of Broken Bow passed away unexpectedly at home Jan. 12, 2011.
Wayne was born June 18, 1931, in Merna to Fredrick (Fritz) and Alice Hirsch. Wayne grew up on a farm west of Merna and graduated from Merna High school in 1949.
September 9, 1951 he was united in marriage to Rosella Mae Booker in Callaway. They resided on a small farm southwest of Callaway until moving to Kimball, then to Broken Bow in 1957.
Wayne farmed; worked for the City of Kimball; Callaway Co-op; Custer Public Power; Broken Bow Co-op; and finally Custer County Roads Department.
Elva Inez (Knapp) (Babcock) Nielsen age 91 of Broken Bow formerly of Anselmo was called to heaven Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Broken Bow.
Funeral services were Jan. 15, 2011, at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow, with the Rev. Mike Wheatly officiating. Burial was in the Broken Bow Cemetery. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements. A visitation was held at Govier Brothers Mortuary. Memorials may be given to the family.
Elva May Vanek, age 85, of Sargent, died Jan. 7, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Funeral services were Jan. 12, 2011, at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Mark Stones officiating. Burial will be at the West Lawn Memorial Cemetery and Mausoleum in Eugene, Ore.
Elva was born Feb. 27, 1925, in Sargent, to Noel and Minnie (Drapper) Amos. She attended school and graduated from Sargent High School in 1942.
Elva married Charles Vanek. Charles died in 1982. Elva enjoyed gardening, collecting dolls, and spending hours working in her yard.
Robert K. Masters, age 85, of Broken Bow died Jan. 15, 2011.
He was born March 13, 1925, near North Platte to W.C. and Sophia Masters. They moved to McPherson County, south of Tryon, when Robert was six-years-old.
He went to school and graduated from McPherson County High School in 1943. After graduating, he worked at the home ranch, for his mother.
He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge in Tryon for 25 years.
In 1962, he married Lois Wilcox and they adopted three children, Michelle, Teresa and Mary.
