Joe E. Bradley, age 78 of Ansley, died Friday May 11, 2012 at his home in Ansley. Funeral services were May 14, at the Christian Church in Ansley, with the Rev. Mel Shepherd officiating. Burial was in the Merna Cemetery with military rites. Memorials made be made to the Ansley Christian Church, Sandhills Cancer Fund, or Hospice.
Joe was born Jan. 10, 1934, in Ellis County, Okla., to Wallace and Oleta (Riggs) Bradley. Joe married Betty Lou Hendershot May 30, 1959. Betty Lou died in 2009.
Margaret J. Lenstrom (Joan), of Comstock, died Monday, May 14, 2012 at the Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 18, at the Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent with the Rev. Don Schauda officiating. Burial will be in the Douglas Grove Cemetery west of Comstock. Visitations will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Lenstrom was born July 11, 1937, in Trenton, and spent her chidhood in the westren Nebraska area. She graduated from Sidney High School in 1956.
Jane Simonson Hodges, 89, died May 9, 2012, at Linden Court in North Platte.
Jane was born March 9, 1923, to Carl and June (Kemp) Simonson at their homestead five miles north of Mullen. Jane graduated from Mullen High School in 1941.
She married Bill Hodges Nov. 7, 1945. They ranched in the Sandhills for several years before moving to Thedford in 1968 to own and operate Hodges' Conoco until their retirement in 1982.
Gene T. Jeffries, age 84 of Fremont, died May 4, 2012 in Fremont.
He was born Feb. 7, 1928, in Palisade, to Ivan McKinley and Ruth Charity (French) Jeffries. Gene lived in Missouri, Colorado and Nebraska as his father searched for work during the Depression Years. He was baptized into the Church of Christ at the age of 13 in Worthinbgton, Mo.
Gene and Edith Rose Anderson were married in Wauneta, Dec. 5, 1948. They spent their honeymoon stranded at his familyâ€™s home by the blizzard of â€™48-â€™49. October 3, 1950, they became the proud parents of Judith Ann Jeffries.
Donna Lee Young, 83, passed away peacefully and painlessly April 28, 2012, at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev., after a five month struggle with bone cancer and a brain tumor. A resident of Fallon, Nev., for the past 12 years, she recently celebrated 62 years of marriage with her husband, Wilbur M. Young, USN Retired.
Donna is survived by her husband; two sons; her sister, and an abundance of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends all around the world and her little dog, Mila. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed by all.
Leona J. Hromas Mulford, 79 of Lincoln, formerly of Broken Bow, died Wednesday, May 2, 2012. Leona was born April 2, 1933, in Martinsville, Mo., to Archie S. and Nina B. (Edwards) Graham.
Leona was retired as an LPN at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln.
June Ellen Fergusen was born in Broken Bow, June 6, 1946. She lived in Brewster and attended a country school and then Brewster High School. She graduated in 1964. June continued her education and attended beauty school in Hastings and graduated in 1965.
June was married to Larry Winberg May 16, 1965. Larry and June moved to St. Joseph, Mo., and were later transferred to Leavenworth, Kan., where they had their first child, Travis, June 28, 1967. The family moved to Lincoln in 1968, where Larry attended barber school and June worked at Lucille Duer Salon.
Charles â€śChuckâ€ť Blakeman, age 86, formerly of Merna, died Thursday, May 3, 2012, at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Charles Horace Blakeman was born to Wallace and Nellie lone (Lang) Blakeman Sept. 5, 1925, at Merna. He grew up on the family farm west of Merna, attending Fairfield Country School. He attended Merna High School until he was a sophomore when he left school to take over the responsibilities on the family farm.
Alfred Creig Giles was the fifth of seven children born to Everett and Ida (Johnston) Giles July 26, 1945, at home in Elsmere. He died May 4, 2012, at the Genoa Community Hospital in Genoa, at the age of 66.
Alfred attended school thru the 4th grade at Elsmere District 101. He completed his grade school education at schools in Lincoln, Halsey and Dunning. His high school education was obtained at Rock County High School in Bassett and Keya Paha High School in Springview.
Hazel Jennings passed away quietly in her sleep at Shepherd of the Valley Care Center April 30, 2012. She was 106 years old.
Hazel was born Feb. 28, 1906, in Lodi, near Oconto. Her parents were Ross and Maude Kitch. She had a brother, Roy, who was two years older than her. When Hazel was 6-months-old, her family moved to a homestead nine miles northwest of Climax. Her father dug wells for a living.
