Evelyn Margaret (Smith) Fowler was born Sept. 6, 1917, near Nesbit, which was about nine miles west of Stapleton. She left the loving care at Rose Lane Home in Loup City, and departed this life Jan. 15, 2013, at 7:40 p.m. At that same moment she was welcomed by her Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ into her new and eternal home.
She was greeted by her husband, John Mervin; her father and mother, Harry "Bud", Smith, Beatrice "Birdie" Echo (Heldenbrand) Smith; sister, Vera June (Smith) Miller; little brother, Charles Oscar Smith and a host of family and friends.
Karen Louise Wilcox, nÃ©e Nielsen, 69, of Virginia Beach, Virg., passed away peacefully Jan. 17, 2013, at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. The cause of death was complications from a stroke.
Karen was born Jan. 19, 1943, in Aurora, to Emma Louise Nielsen and Oscar Frick Nielsen. As a child, Karen loved playing piano and organ, cooking, and fishing, and was an active member of the 4-H Club and Rainbow for Girls.
Michael Dee Diefenbaugh, 67 of Merna passed away at his home Jan. 9, 2013.
Mike was born Oct. 15, 1945 in Dunning, to Junior and Willda (Crone) Diefenbaugh. He was raised in Merna and graduated from Merna High School in 1963. He was baptized in the Christian Church of Litchfield.
June 28, 1966, he married Judith Yantzie in Broken Bow. They lived in Merna for 46 years, where they raised four children: Misti, Michelle, Kristi and Kyle.
W. Jane Gottschalk was born Aug. 17, 1917, to Joseph T. and Edith M. Hendrickson in Thayer County. She attended country school thru 8th grade, then attended Belvidere High School.
Following graduation, Jane taught country school.While teaching, she met Kenneth C. Gottschalk. They were married May 29, 1937.
Dean Shadel, 91, of Callaway, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Callaway Good Life Center.
Laurin A. Winkelhake, age 75, of Syracuse, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, at his home in Syracuse. A funeral for Laurin Winkelhake was Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Hall Funeral Chapel in Auburn, with burial following at the St. Paul Cemetery near Talmage.
He is survived by his brother Roger and wife Iris (Lyons) Winkelhake of Lincoln; three cousins, Virginia Heinke of Lincoln, Shirley Nowack of Higginsville, Mo. and Alvin Winkelhake of Palm Springs, Calif.; also by extended Lyons family, and friends.
Hall Funeral Chapel of Auburn was in charge of arrangements.
Ralph Ferguson, age 86, of Miller, formerly of Ansley, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.
Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at the First Christian Church in Ansley, with the Rev. Mel Shepherd officiating. Burial was in the Ansley Cemetery with Military Honors. Memorials are to the Kidney Foundation. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow was in charge of arrangements.
George Edward Munn, 79 of Lincoln, died Jan. 14, 2013, after he lost his battle to lung cancer. George was born April 15, 1933, in Mason City, to George Emerson Munn and Flora Cecil Spencer.
During January 1953, George enlisted in the U.S Air Force during the Korean War. He served 10 1/2 years as an Air Force aircraft mechanic. During one of his overseas tours at the Panama Canal Zone, he met his beautiful Panama born wife, Louise Gloria Grote. Together they had four children: George Jr, Mary, Fritz and David.
Ivan R. Cooley, age 89 of Broken Bow, died Jan. 13, 2013, at the Golden Living Center in Broken Bow. Funeral services were. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Govier Brothers Mortuary with Pastor Kathy Salts officiating. Interment was at the Westerville Cemetery with Military Honors with Govioer Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the Westerville Cemetery.
Ivan Rex Cooley was born June 11, 1923, near Gates, to Rex and Marie (Allison) Cooley. He attended school at Gates and graduated from Westerville High School in 1941.
Dorthy Ione Knouse Koepke, accomplished writer, speaker, and beloved mother of 10, joyfully went to be with her Lord Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, in Norfolk. She was 90 years old.
Dorthy was born in Kingsbury County near Iroquois, SD Jan. 24, 1922, the third of nine children to Fred and Myrtle Bond Knouse. She was baptized as a young adult at Methodist Episcopal Church in Cavour, SD.
