Barry Duane Young, 70 of Winona, Minn., and formerly from Nebraska, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at his home.
Barry, an only child, was born Aug. 12, 1943, in Litchfield, to Robert and Elaine (Sigler) Young. He was raised in Ansley and graduated from high school in 1961. He enlisted in the United States Air Force Jan. 18, 1963, and was stationed in New Mexico, where he was present during underground nuclear testing.
Charles K. â€śSmokeyâ€ť West, 83 of Kearney, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at his home. Funeral services were Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremat-ion Services in Kearney with the Rev. Dean Pofahl officiating. Burial was at the Pleasanton Cemetery. Royle Dee Hazen, age 68, of Stromsburg, formerly of Milburn, passed away Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Henry George Duerkson, 84, of Broken Bow died Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at the Golden Living Center in Broken Bow.
A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at the Mason City First Baptist Church with Pastor Roger McDermott officiating. There will be no visitation and the inurnment will be at a later date.
Henry was born Feb. 2, 1929, in Newton, Kan., to Henry B. and Lizzy (Geddert) Duerkson.
He was joined in Christian marriage to Dorothy Ann Adams Aug. 3, 1957, at Oakland Park Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kan.
Delbert James Jacobsen, 76, of Norwich, NY, formerly of Sargent, went home to be with his Savior Oct. 3, 2013, after a prolonged illness. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by his loving family.
Del was born in Minden, April 7, 1937, to Glenn and Iris Jacobsen. He graduated from Minden High School in 1955.
Lena Elvina (Bradley) Bratton was born July 3, 1924, in Dothan, Huston County, Ala., to Carrie (Richardson) and Perry Bradley. Lena died Oct. 2, 2013, in Broken Bow.
Carrie and Perry had three children; Lena, Robert and Marion. When Lena was about 11-years-old, her daddy passed away. She had to quit school to care for her brother and sister so Carrie could work to feed the family.
Carrie met and married Henry Edgar and Lena gained two sisters, June and Jean Edgar. Also to this union, she eventually gained step-brothers Stewart, Charles, Johnny and Ballard.
After a courageous battle with cancer, Ellen Lois Datus, age 65, passed away in Broken Bow, the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 1. She was surrounded by her husband, Edwin, and daughters Michelle, Melinda and Stephanie.
Born in 1948 in Chambers, to Chloe Ellen McKay Harley and Duane McKay, Ellen was drawn to a life of service to others. Her biggest calling was taking care of people, especially her family. At home, she was a selfless, loyal and loving wife, mother of three, step-mother of five and grandmother of 15.
Claudia Kay Bestol, age 75 of Purdum, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at her home in Purdum fighting cancer. Memorial funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at the United Church of Christ in Purdum at 10 a.m. with Pastor Diana K. Jahn officiating. Inurnment in the Purdum Cemetery will be at a later date.
Claudia Bestol is survived by her husband, Earl Bestol of Purdum; a son, Wayne (Joyce) Bestol of Minden; two daughters, Kay Lynn Bestol of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Brenda (Dave) Masek of Purdum; three grandchildren, two great-grandsons, and a brother, Bob Knag of Alliance.
Julia Ann Eichelberger, age 49 of Broken Bow, passed away Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at her home. Julie was born Dec. 31, 1963, at Callaway Hospital to Terry and Marge Eichelberger.
Julie grew up in Broken Bow where she attended school until she was a junior. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1981.
At a young age Julie was diagnosed with a rare heart condition and later with diabetes. Even though she struggled with this throughout her life she never lost her love of life or her love for her family. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her family and friends.
Michael Lynn Buckles passed away at his home, surrounded by family, in Broken Bow, Sept. 21, 2013, at the age of 59.
Mike is predeceased by his parents, Bob and Mary Frances.
Mike was born to Bob and Mary Frances Buckles Dec. 4, 1953, in Martin, S.D. Mike lived in Merriman, where he attended elementary school. He went on to graduate from Bennett County High School in Martin, S.D. in 1972, excell-ing in basketball, football and track, recently being inducted into the Bennett County Athletic Hall of Fame.
