Alice A. (McCallum) Crooker was born April 22, 1931, to David and Lillie (Petet) McCallum in Anselmo. Due to the death of her mother, she stayed with her Aunt Bertha and Uncle Charlie in Merna. She graduated from Mason City, and went on to teach in the Mullen area.
August 11, 1952, she married Carl "Bud" Crooker in Broken Bow. Bud and Alice moved to a ranch south of Wood Lake. To this union, they were blessed with seven children, David, Georgia, Linda, Marie, Larry, (who died in infancy), Lillie and Joe.
Joyce Laverna McCaslin, age 81, of Broken Bow died Aug. 27, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Funeral services were Saturday Aug. 30, 2014, at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with Pastor Larry DeMoss officiating. Interment was in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated later.
Joyce McCaslin was born Feb. 7, 1933, at Broken Bow, to Roy andCleone Mae (Mentzer) Eberle. Joyce was married to Dan McCaslin.
Dean Sheets passed away Aug. 26, 2014 in Greeley, Colo. He was born Feb. 8, 1933, in Lenora, Kan. to Loyd and Irene (Knoll) Sheets, moving to Nebraska when he was a child.
Dean grew up in the Stapleton/Gandy, area graduating from Gandy High School in 1951.
In 1956, Dean married Jean Williams. To this union, one son and two daughters were born.
Bernice M. Blakeman, age 94, of Broken Bow, died Tuesday, Aug.19, 2014 at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Bernice was born Sept. 7, 1919, at Callaway to John P. and Anna M.L. (Schmidt) Blakeman. She graduated from Merna High School in 1940.
Bernice spent her entire life on the family farm and ranch on Cliff Table west of Merna. In 2000 she moved to Broken Bow with her sister, Ilene.
She is a past member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.
Bernice enjoyed feeding and watching the many wild birds that frequented her yard.
Doris E. Hartman, 77, of Kearney died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014, at the CHI Health Good Samaritan in Kearney.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Aug.28, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kearney. Pastor Duane Duley will officiate and burial will follow at Kearney Cemetery.
Visitation with family was Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014, at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family for designation at a later date.
Douglas Michael Young parted from this life July 27, 2014, in Vernon Co, Mo. Born Sept. 29, 1956, to Harold LeRoy Young and Patricia Waldron Young in Callaway.
Doug graduated from CHS in 1975. He spent the summers of his high school years working with his dad in his painting business.
Alfred McCullough, of Broken Bow, passed away Aug. 21, 2014 in Broken Bow. Visitation were at Govier Brotherâ€™s Mortuary Aug. 24, 2014.
Funeral services were at the Berean Church, Broken Bow Monday, Aug.25 with the Rev. Larry DeMoss officiating. Burial followed at Ansley Cemetery in Ansley, with Govier Brotherâ€™s Mortuary handling the funeral arrangements.
Alfred Earl McCullough was born in a soddy south of Berwyn to David W. and Chloe (Johnston) McCullough Sept. 8, 1923. He walked to Fairview Elementary School where he graduated from eighth grade.
Virginia (Monson) Mauler, age 96, of Sargent, Nebraska died August 18, 2014 in the Burwell Community Health Center in Burwell, Nebraska. Virginia was born November 17, 1917 in West Union, Nebraska to Otto and Eunice (Pulliam) Monson. Virginia grew up in the Sargent Community graduating from Sargent High School in 1935. She continued her education to become a school teacher. Virginia taught three years at Coburg Country School. Virginia also worked for her dad, Otto Monson, and her uncle Floyd Pulliam at the Sargent Livestock Commission Company.
Rosie was born to Herman Klug and Arlean Krueger Klug on August 18, 1950 in Norfolk, Nebr. She moved to the Oconto area when she joined the Fred and Velma Kranz family as a foster child in her early teens.
After graduating from Platte Valley Academy in Shelton, Nebr. in 1968, Rosie attended nursing school at Porter Hospital in Denver, Colo. During her nursing career, she worked in various facets of nursing ranging from nursing homes, assisted living and mental health for over 40 years until taking early retirement due to health issues.
Jean Shears, age 90, of Broken Bow, Ne. died Wednesday Aug. 13, 2014 at the St. Johnâ€™s Good Samaritan Center in Kearney, Nebraska.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 16th Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow, Nebraska with Stanley Morrison and Julie Harthorn officiating.Â Graveside services were conducted at the Hillcrest Cemetery at Thedford, Neb.Â Visitation was August 15 at Govier Brothers with family greeting friends. A memorial will be decided on at a later date.
