John Milton Birnie, 91

July 8, 2015

John Milton Birnie, 91 of Broken Bow, was called to his heavenly home June 29, 2015, surrounded by family. He spent the past two years fighting cancer never giving in to it until his last breath.

John was born Sept. 17, 1923, on Ryno Table to Robert and Grace (Eggleston) Birnie. He attended school at Custer Canyon and Ryno Table through the 10th grade finishing his education by correspondence through the Nebraska University.

Frances Roemer, 88

Frances Roemer age 88 of Broken Bow died Thursday, July 2, 2015, at Custer Care Center in Broken Bow.

A rosary service followed by funeral services were at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Broken Bow with Father Jim Hunt officiating Monday, July 6. Burial was in the Broken Bow Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of the arrangements. 

Clifford D. Baker, 95

Clifford D. Baker, 95, of Broken Bow, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, Colo. 

He was born to Ernest and Clara Belle (Loyd) Baker Oct. 11, 1919, on a farm north of Broken Bow.  He attended Snake Run Elementary and Junior High and Broken Bow High School where he graduated Aug. 31, 1938. 

Phyllis Ann Knoell, 81

Phyllis Ann Knoell, 81, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2015, at her home in Lincoln.

She was born in Westerville Jan. 24, 1934. Phyllis was the first of three daughters born to George and Ellen Knight.

June 12, 1951, she married T. Carl (Spike) Knoell at St. Anselm’s Catholic Church in Anselmo. The couple initially farmed at New Helena, but moved to Lincoln in 1960, when Spike took a position with the Nebraska National Guard.

They were blessed with four children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Dale Baker, 95

July 1, 2015

Dale Baker, age 95, of Broken Bow, died Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at the Medical Center of the Rockies, in Loveland, Colo.

Funeral services will be Friday, July 3, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Todd Karges officiating. 

Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery with Military Honors. 

Visitation will be Thursday, July 2, 2015, 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. at Govier Bros. Mortuary in Broken Bow with the family greeting friends 6 - 7 p.m. 

Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Post #126 or the Broken Bow United Methodist Church. 

Phyllis Ann Knoell, 81

Phyllis Ann Knoell, 81, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2015, at her home in Lincoln.

She was born in Westerville Jan. 24, 1934. Phyllis was the first of three daughters born to George and Ellen Knight.

Merritt Sherman Winchester, 76

Merritt Sherman Winchester Jr. age 76, of Broken Bow, died Saturday June 20, 2015, at the Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow.

Funeral services were June 24, 2015, at the E-Free Church in Broken Bow with Pastor Brian Klein officiating. Burial was in the Broken Bow Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the family to be decided on at a later date.

Merritt was born Oct. 21, 1938, to Merritt and Dorothy (Florea) Winchester Sr. in Merna. He grew up in Custer Center where he attended rural country school. He then attended Broken Bow High School where he graduated class of 1956.

John Raymond Taylor, 85

John Raymond Taylor, 85, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2015, at his home under the care of his family and Hands of Hope Home Health and Hospice.

John was born in Mason City to Ray B. and Addie Wright Taylor March 13, 1930. He attended Mason City School and graduated at the age of 17.

John is survived by his wife, Roberta, his daughter, Barbara Taylor, his son, John (Anita) Taylor, all of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and his daughter-in-law, Patricia Taylor of Aloha, Ore.

Lilas Marie Smith, 88

Lilas Marie Smith, 88, passed away Friday, June 19, 2015, at Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie, Wyo. surrounded by her family and holding the hand of her sweetheart of over 71 years.

Lilas Turner was born May 11, 1927, in Brewster, to Fred and Augusta Turner. She was an only child.

During high school she met the love of her life, Laddie Guy Smith. They were married Aug. 4, 1944, and soon started their family on the Smith Ranch in Brewster.

Eugene ‘Chat’ R. Chartraw, 90

Eugene “Chat” R. Chartraw, age 90 of Ansley, died Thursday, June 18, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society St. John’s Nursing Home in Kearney.

Funeral services were Monday, June 22, 2015, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Broken Bow with Father Jim Hunt officiating.  Burial was Tuesday at the Ansley Cemetery with Military Honors.

Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow was in charge of arrangements. 

Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Program.
