Velma Fern Ritz, 94, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Edgewood Vista in
Grand Island. Graveside services were Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at
Douglas Grove Cemetery, west of Comstock. Dan Naranjo officiated. At
Velma's request there was no public visitation. All Faiths Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.
Velma was born Oct. 1, 1919, in Comstock, the daughter of Hazel
Veronica A. Englert, age 83 of North Platte, passed away Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center. She was born Jan. 25, 1931, at Anselmo, to Ira and Katherine (Powers) Green. She graduated from Anselmo High School and attended Chadron State College.
James â€śJimâ€ť O. Peterson, 89, of Arnold, passed away Feb. 11, 2014, at the Callaway District Hospital. He was born July 18, 1924, to Emil and Esther (Trude) Peterson at Beatrice.
As a young boy he moved with his parents to Grand Island. At the age of 14, he received Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord and loved to share his faith. He graduated from Grand Island High School with the class of 1942.
Delores â€śElaineâ€ť (Young) Poland, 82, of Lincoln, died Dec. 31, 2013. She was born June 21, 1931, in Custer County, to Glen and Blanche (Loyd) Young. Elaine was a retired clerk for several local businesses. She was a member of Capitol City Christian Church in Lincoln, and also was active in the Second Baptist Church. She volunteered at BryanLGH Medical Center, the Lied Center and Encounter Center at Morrill Hall.
Cody Deets Johnson, age 48, passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, of Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme. He was in the loving company of family members.
Cody was born Aug. 3, 1965, at Fremont, to Gilbert Ross and Dian Gammel Johnson. He graduated from Oakland-Craig and joined the Marine Corps. Cody was married previously to Judith A. Cantrell and Collette Largent. To these marriages, two children were born, and one adopted.
Louise E. Schmidt, age 94 of Merna, died Thursday Feb.13, 2014, at the Heritage Hall Care Home in Broken Bow.
Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Dawn Black officiating and rites by the Broken Bow D.O.E.S. Burial was in the Merna Cemetery. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the Broken Bow D.O.E.S.
Shirley A. Krause, age 85 of Ansley, died Feb. 13, 2014, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Ansley High School Gymnasium with the Rev. Mel Shepherd officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5 - 7 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the Ansley Rescue Unit. Interment will be at the Ansley Cemetery.
Hastings resident Royce (Roy) Haines, 77, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at Mary Lanning HealthCare in Hastings.
Memorial open house was Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at the Elks Lodge in Hastings. In honoring his wishes to be cremated there was no viewing or visitation. DeWitt Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Hastings, handled arrangements.

Jeanine Reneau Chitwood passed away Jan. 22, 2014, of ovarian cancer. She was born Dec. 13, 1933, close to the Middle Loup River near Gates, the youngest and only daughter of Meredith T. Reneau and Caroline M. Reneau. Her early childhood was spent near Arnold, where her parents and three brothers lived. They later moved to the Bethel Union Community north of Broken Bow where she graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1952. She loved collecting dolls, puzzles, and Christmas.
Gordon F. Hoskins, 72, of Broken Bow, formerly of Arnold, died Saturday, Febr. 8, 2014, at the Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
In the fall of 1941, on the 5th day of November, Gordon Francis Hoskins was born with the aid of a midwife in the house where he would live almost his whole life. Gordon's middle name was the same as his grandfather Francis Alfonso Hoskins.
Gordon's grade school days were spent in the one room schoolhouse of Loyal.
