Virginia Britain, 85

November 10, 2011

Virginia Britain, age 85, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Graveside services were Monday, Nov. 7, at the Ansley Cemetery at Ansley, with Pastor Victor Karg officiating. Interment was at the Ansley Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Virginia Mae Britain was born April 25, 1926, at Grand Island, to Robert and Addie (Hart) Frye. She married K.O. Britain Feb. 17, 1956, at Gering. Mr. Britain passed away Sept. 17, 1990

Edgar Deterding, 73

Edgar “Eddie” Lee Deterding, age 73 of Anselmo, passed away Nov. 2, 2011, at Broken Bow.
He was born Feb. 1, 1938, in Arnold, to Edgar W. and Cleo Spratt Deterding. He graduated from Arnold High School in 1956.
He married Barbara M. Flint in Stapleton, and resided on a farm south of Arnold. To this union four children were born; Susan, Judy, Bruce and Earl.
Eddie farmed, ranched, worked at Arnold and Gothenburg sale barns and was a custom cowboy for area ranches.

Hubert Tarleton, 94

Hubert Tarleton - epic storyteller, quick-witted humorist, and purveyor of ideas - passed away peacefully at the age of 94, Nov. 3, 2011, in Lincoln while surrounded by his four children. He was born July 27, 1917, and adopted by parents, James and Matilda Tarleton. He grew up on a farm near Walworth, attending elementary school there and high school at Gates and Milburn. He was a frequent medal winner in track and field and loved participating in sports. For several years, he played on neighborhood baseball and softball teams.

Stanley Sommer, 92

Stanley Andrew Sommer was born Sept. 24, 1919, at Merna. He graduated from Merna High School in 1936.
Sept. 8, 1942, he married Sylvia Pomplun. He died at Jennie M. Melham Memorial Hospital in Broken Bow Oct. 30, 2011, at the age of 92.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia; his parents, Almore and Esther Sommer; infant brother, Hugh; sister, Allie, and brother Warren.

Trevor L. Haller, 17

Trevor L. Haller, 17 of Kearney passed away November 1, 2011 at his home. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, November 4, 2011 at the Evangelical Free Church with the Revs. Mike Shields and Tim Stratton officiating. Visitation is 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the O'Brien-Straatmann-Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney. Interment will be at the Kearney Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family in lieu of flowers. Herb Struempler, 86

November 2, 2011

Herb Struempler, age 86, of Broken Bow, formerly of Oconto, passed away Oct. 27, 2011, at Heritage Hall in Broken Bow.  
He was born Oct. 27, 1925, west of Oconto, to Frederick “Fritz” and Minnie (Schwarze) Struempler. He entered into the United States Navy in 1944, and faithfully served our country in World War II until his honorable discharge in 1946.
Herb married Elsie Knispel Jan. 20, 1948, at the Christ Lutheran Church, southwest of Oconto. Together, the couple farmed and ranched west of Oconto before retiring in 1995.

Eunice Mandelko, 75

Eunice Marie Nadobny Brown-Mandelko, age 75, passed away at her home in Chadron, surrounded by family and friends Monday, Oct. 25, 2011. Eunice’s funeral mass was Saturday, Oct. 29, at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chadron with Father Tim Stoner and Father James Joseph officiating. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Chadron.
Eunice was born Sept. 15, 1936, in Rushville, to Sylvester and Josephine Nadobny. She grew up on the family farm, and enjoyed spending time with her brother Albert (Buddy) and cousins until 1950, when her father died and they moved to Chadron.

Carl Schmidt, 78

November 2, 2011

Carl E. Schmidt, age 78 of Broken Bow, died at the Callaway District Hospital in Callaway Oct. 27, 2011. Memorial services were Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011, at the Assembly of God Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Rick Johnson officiating. Inurnment was at the Broken Bow Cemetery. A register book will be available for signing at Govier Brothers Mortuary.
Mr. Schmidt was born Dec. 23, 1932, at Anselmo, to Alfred and Nellie (Turpening) Schmidt.

He lived most of his life in Broken Bow, working at BD until he retired in 1996.

Richard Reed Wattles, 81

Richard Reed (Dick) Wattles of Longmont, Colo., died Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at his home. He was 81.
Dick was born Feb. 11, 1930, in Kearney, and grew up in Broken Bow.

John Hammond, 78

November 2, 2011

John Eli Hammond was born Dec. 13, 1932 to Agnes and William Hammond of Broken Bow, and passed to eternal life Oct. 12, 2011, after complications of Alzheimer's and a stroke. The funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Clear Lake City, Texas, and he was buried Oct. 15, 2011 at the Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, Texas.
Jack, as he was known, played fullback on the football team and graduated from Broken Bow, with the class of 1950. He married his high school sweetheart, Joan Mohatt, daughter of Charles and Anna Mohatt, Aug. 19, 1952.

The 2014 National High School Rodeo is at Rock Springs, Wyo. and runs from July 13-19. As of now...
