Elizabeth Deaver, infant daughter of Robb R. and Danielle (DuPuis) Deaver, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings. Anastasia (Ann) Gates, 84

Anastasia (Ann) M. Gates passed away peacefully Dec. 8, 2010, with Dillard H. Gates, her loving husband of nearly 65 years at her side.
Ann was born July 2, 1926, in the small farming community of Anselmo, to Charles and Anna Mohatt. Ann grew up on a farm with her eight brothers and sisters and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1944.

Bessie Schultz, 90

Bessie Schultz, age 90 of Sargent, died Monday Dec. 13, 2010, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow. Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at 2 p.m. in Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Mark Stones officiating. Burial will be in the Somerford Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday Dec. 17, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Jan Hollers, 63

Jan (Juker) Hollers, 63, of Colorado Springs, Colo., passed away Dec. 3, 2010. She was born Oct. 9, 1947, to Henry and Virginia Juker at Broken Bow. She graduated from high school in North Platte.
Jan is survived by her three sons, Hal James of Columbia, S. C., Robert James of Grand Island and Josh Hollers of Colorado Springs, Colo.; her father, Henry of North Platte; a sister, Saundra Welch of Equador; and a brother, Gerald Juker of Colorado Springs; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother.

Maxine Wood, 90

Maxine Z. (Cooley) Wood, a former resident of Aracadia, died of natural causes Nov. 22, 2010, at Immanual Lutheran Home in Kalispell, Mont.
Maxine was born in Merna Nov. 15, 1920, the first of four children of Rex and Marie (Allison) Cooley. She attended several country schools around Custer County, graduating from Westerville High School in 1939. She also attended Kearney State Teacher’s College.

Barbara Garrett, 82

Barbara J. Garrett, 82 of Arvada, Colo., formerly of Redondo Beach, Calif. and Arnold, passed away Dec. 2, 2010. She was born March 10, 1928, in Arnold to George and Ethel (Maxson) Scott.
She graduated from Arnold High School in 1946. She married Ivan Garrett of Stapleton March 19, 1949. They had four children; Ronald Lee of Hurricane, Utah, Marla Jean Heckenlively of Firestone, Colo., Patti Ann Nelson of Arvada, Colo., and Donald Dee of Redondo Beach, Calif.
They moved to Redondo Beach in 1953, and lived there for 45 years before locating to Arvada due to health issues.

Lloyd Wells, 88

Lloyd A. Wells, age 88, of Broken Bow, passed away Nov. 27, 2010, at Golden LivingCenter in Cozad.
Lloyd was born Sept. 16, 1922, to Frank and Mattie Wells.
After graduating from Broken Bow High School, Lloyd lived at home in the Sandhills north of Milburn.
Lloyd being one of seven children, enjoyed ranch life and their new home that his oldest brother, Woodrow, built to replace the sod house where he was born and raised. Lloyd was soon drafted into the army and received his basic training

Ruby McCandless, 97

Ruby Pearl (Peterson) McCandless, 97, of Broken Bow, passed away of natural causes Nov. 29, 2010, at Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow.
Ruby was born June 7, 1913, in a sod house at Weissert, Custer County, Nebraska, to Milton and Mable (Govier) Peterson. She was the youngest of nine children. She live all of her life in Custer County.
Ruby married Melvin LeRoy (Roy) McCandless Dec. 22, 1932, in Julesburg, Colo. They had four sons, William, Eldon, Terry and Nick; and one daughter, Ardith Joleen.

Jerry Smith, 73

Gerald Wilber Smith, 73, of Gothenburg, died Nov. 30, 2010, in Gothenburg. He was born Nov. 29, 1937, in Ontario, Ore., son of J. Elton and Edith (Rettig) Smith.
He grew up in Eastern Oregon and attended schools in Durkee and Brogan and graduated from Ontario High.
Jerry served his country in the Army from Dec. 1960 to Nov. 1962.
Jerry married Judith Miller, March 1964, in Reno Nev. Jerry and Judy lived and worked on a ranch in Oregon. They moved to Nebraska in 1972 where Jerry operated a Well Service for almost 25 years.
Jerry enjoyed hunting, fishing and horses.

Keith Blauvelt, 96

Keith Kermit Blauvelt passed from this life Nov. 28, 2010, at the age of 96 years, 5 months and 5 days at the Pioneer Nursing Home in Mullen where he had resided for the last few years.
Keith was born June 23, 1914, to Leslie Joseph and Adda Ethel (Wood) Blauvelt in a sod house southwest of Thedford on the Blauvelt homestead. he was the forth of five children.
As a young man his family were farmers and he worked with his family and neighbors breaking horses, picking corn and whatever else there was to do to make a living during the “dirty thirties.”
