Emanuel “Toby” Hosek, 85

Graveside services for Emanuel 'Toby' Hosek will be Sept. 23, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Geranium Cemetery.
Emanuel (Toby) Hosek, 85, of Sargent, died Aug. 1, 2011, at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver, Colo. He was born April 19, 1926, in Sargent, to Joseph and Agnes (Hejsek) Hosek
Toby is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Joseph, Emil, Anne, and Mary Hosek, Agnes Hollingsworth, and Emma McGahan

Mina “Darb” Ahrens, 82

Darb Ahrens left her failing earthly body and assumed her incorruptible heavenly body the afternoon of Sept. 10, 2011. As her immediate family surrounded her bed, held her hands, stroked her forehead and softly sang her favorite hymns, Darb quietly passed from this earth and into heaven with dignity and grace.
Mina Darlene Ahrens (Spencer) was born April 28, 1929, and was the eighth of 11 surviving children of Ralph and Elsie Spencer of Weissert. Darb was raised on the Spencer homestead farm near Weissert, where she attended school and the Church of God.

Everett G. Zierlein, 92

Everett Glen Zierlein, age 92, of Lake McConaughy, passed away Sept, 11, 2011 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.
He grew up in the Sandhills until leaving for WWII. He served in the U.S. Army in Normandy, France, Rhineland, and Central Europe from 1941 to 1945. He returned to the Sandhills and married Lula Hopkins Dec. 18, 1946. He ranched on the family ranch near Arnold for many years.
He married Burnice Dickenson in 1981. He retired to Lake McConaughy in the early 80’s.

John J. Faherty, 80

John J. Faherty, 80, of Arnold departed from this life Sept. 11, 2011. He was born Aug. 4, 1931, in Arnold, to Anna Catherine (Mackley) Faherty and John William Faherty.
He graduated from Arnold High School, Creighton University and Kearney Teachers College with a masters degree in English. He taught English in several schools.
John was a veteran of the Korean War. He had been a bookkeeper for many years at Hagler Trucking, after which he retired to his farm south of Arnold.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his sister, Dolores.

Dorothy Granger, 90

Dorothy Granger, 90, of Comstock, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at her residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Wescott Baptist Church in Comstock with the Rev. Don Schauda officiating. Burial will be in the Douglas Grove Cemetery west of Comstock. Rhoad Funeral Home of Sargent is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy Rose (Plock) Granger was born Nov. 22, 1920, in Valley County, to Albert and Ethel (Lusk) Plock. She was the ninth child born of 15. She spent her whole life in the Comstock area.

Edna L. Sterling, 94

Edna Lucille Sterling, 94 of Broken Bow, passed away Sept. 9, 2011, at Golden Living Center in Broken Bow.
She was born Sept. 2, 1917, to Glen Elton and Rose (Witcofski) McMullen in Crab Orchard. When she was six months of age the family moved to the Custer Center community, northwest of Broken Bow where she later attended rural school and church. She graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1936.

Leonard Nehls, 74

Leonard H. Nehls, age 74 of Arcadia, died Aug. 22, 2011, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Memorial services will be Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, at 10 a.m. in the Arcadia Community Center in Arcadia with the Rev. Jeff Hale officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Loup City. Memorials have been established to the Arcadia Fire and Rescue Units.
Leonard H. Nehls was born March 23, 1937, at San Bernardino, Calif., to Henry and Mamie Pearl (Warford) Nehls. Leonard attended school in Kearney.

Nolan L. Cooper, 70

Nolan Lloyd Cooper, a resident of Ardmore and owner of Aerotech in Marietta, Okla., died Aug. 31. No services are scheduled at this time.
Nolan was born Dec. 13, 1940, in Dunning. He attended schools in Dunning, Anselmo, Minatare and Sargent, and graduated high school in Central City.

Jonathan H. Scott, 30, of Concordia, Kan., died Aug. 28, 2011, at Cloud County Health Center in Concordia.
Jonathan was born Nov. 23, 1980, in Seward, the son of Monte and Patricia (Young) Scott.
He is survived by his partner, Nathan Bargen of Concordia, Kan.; parents, Monte and Pat Scott of Sargent; sister, Alaunda J. Scott King of St. Joseph, Mo.; brothers David M. Scott of Sargent, Adam R. Scott of Sargent, Jacob E. Scott of Longmont, Colo., Jarod F. Scott of Broken Bow, and Michael J. Scott of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and grandmother, Mary Ann Young of Lamar, Colo.

Donald Douglass, 87

Donald Jay Douglass was born Aug. 7, 1924, to Eben and Lois (Smith) Douglass near Sommerford. He passed away Aug. 28, 2011 at Jennie M Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Donald graduated high school from Gates Public School. After high school he cowboyed with his older brother Earl, on the Walt Cole ranch north of Anselmo. He was drafted into the US Navy where he served as a radio operator on Adak Island off the coast of Alaska during World War II.
