James R. Worth, 70 of Grand Island, died Saturday, July 9, 2011, at St. Francis Medical Center. Celebration of life service was Wednesday at All Faiths Funeral Home Chapel with Dan Naranjo officiating. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in the Merna Cemetery.
Mr. Worth was born Nov. 29, 1940, at Merna, the son of Claude and Margaret (Simonson) Worth.
Funeral services were held June 24 in Whittier, Calif., for Charles Allen Beal, 77, who passed away June 18 after a long illness.
Charles was born April 23, 1934, to Franklin and Frances Beal of Broken Bow. He attended elementary school in Grand Island and in rural Custer County after his parents moved onto a farm in Ash Creek. He would later often reminisce about farm life on the Nebraska prairie.
Helen Marena (Jones) Heller was born May 4, 1924, and passed into eternity June 29, 2011, at the age of 87. Helen was the eldest daughter of Chloie and Earl Jones, born in Hedrick, Iowa. As she often shared, her birth weight was under five pounds and they put her in a shoe box and kept her warm on the back of the cook stove at night.
Jens Michael Christensen, known to most as Mic, 80, of Broken Bow, died June 29, 2011, at Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Mic was born Nov. 19, 1930, in Berwyn to Christian and Elsie Ogal (Wright) Christensen during a winter blizzard, a great surprise as twins had not been expected.
He attended all 12 years of schooling at Berwyn, graduating in 1948, then attended Kearney State College for one year.
Fern Arlene Lanham, 96, of Arnold, died Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.
Fern was born Aug. 7, 1914, in Boone County Iowa, to Olive (Whalen) and Grover Sturtz. Fern moved to Nebraska at the age of 3, to the Middle Loup River on a ranch. They later moved to a ranch north of Whitman and later to the Sturtz Ranch north of Stapleton. After graduation from Mullen High School in 1932, she married Robert Lanham March 17, 1936. They moved to Arnold where they raised four children, Zandra Kyne, Sharon Storkan, Douglas Lanham and Donna Bond.
Delores Irene Clouse, 74, or Arnold passed away at the Golden LivingCenter in Broken Bow, Tuesday, June 28, 2011. She was born Oct. 25, 1936, in Broken Bow, to Dollie Bertha Irene (Timmons) and Glen Lewis Middleton.
She grew up in Oconto, Callaway, Arnold and Stapleton and received her education in Oconto, Callaway and Arnold.
Delores and Charles (Neb) Clouse, Jr. were united in marriage Aug. 2, 1954, in Chadron, after which the couple lived on a ranch in Stapleton and in Arnold, where she worked at the Model Cafe and Archieâ€™s Cafe as a waitress.
Gaylord "Squeak" Schmitz, age 72 of Merna, died Saturday, June 25, 2011, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Funeral services were Wednesday, June 29, 2011, in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow with Father Jim Hunt officiating. Burial with military honors was in the Dale Catholic Cemetery near Merna. Memorials are suggested to the Merna Fire and Rescue or the American Parkinson's Disease Associa-tion.
Memorial services for James Walter Souders, 75, of Wilmington, NC, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Merna, with interment of cremains to follow at the Merna Cemetery. The family will host a lunch in the Merna Community Center after the interment.
James died March 2, 2011, in Wilmington. The Andrews Mortuary in that city handled the cremation.
Viola Mary (Wehling) Ritchie Brim passed peacefully to Heaven while at home, surrounded by her family, Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at the age of 93 years.
Viola was born Dec. 19, 1917, on the family farm near Broken Bow to Charles B. and Anna (Thanel) Wehling. Viola attended country school and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1934, at the age of 16.
Esther Nadene Cox-Pearson, 84, of Broken Bow, formerly of Callaway, died Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at the Golden Living Center in Broken Bow.
She was born Sept. 28, 1926, in Holyoke, Colo., to Ray and Martha (Brown) Stroup. She was a 1945 graduate of Phillips County High School in Haxtun, Colo., and went on to further her education at Sterling Junior College, graduating in May of 1947.
She was baptized in April 1939, in the Presbyterian Church in Colorado and later joined the United Methodist Church in Callaway when the couple moved there.
