The Ansley Lady Warriors qualified for the Girls State Basketball Tournament after a come-from-behind win over Wilcox-Hildreth in the D2-4 district final.
The D2-4 District Champions trailed the entire first half but were able to take the lead near the end of the third quarter. Both teams traded baskets through most of the fourth quarter until Ansley had two key steals as the game clock winded down to pull in the lead for good. The Lady Warriors won the District Championship 44-37 advancing to the State Tournament.
The Sargent Bulldogs became one of three teams that saw their season continue last Thursday. The Bulldogs won the Class D2-8 subdistrict with a 34-28 win over Arcadia. The Bulldogs advance to play Pleasanton in the D2-4 district final in Loup City Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
From up in the Sandhills, Mullen and Sandhills/Thedford both advanced to their respective district final games with 3-point wins. The Mullen Broncos defeated Cody-Kilgore 56-53 and will now play Hay Springs Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Valentine for the D2-6 district title.
VARIOUS SITES -- Five area boys basketball teams saw their season end with disappointment. In the Class D2-7 subdistrict, Litchfieldâ€™s season ended in overtime when Loomis made a 3-point basket with 4.5 seconds to take the lead 61-60. Litchfieldâ€™s last chance was a full court pass that was intercepted by Loomis who ran out the clock. In the other semifinal game, Pleasanton easily handled the SEM Mustangs winning 59-34. Dillon Line led the Mustangs with 19 points followed by Quinten Malcom with 9, Andrey Gallegos 2, John Oâ€™Neill 2 and Lance English 2.
The boys basketball post season begins tonight with five area teams in action tonight. In the Class C2-10 subdistrict at Kearney Catholic, three teams, Ravenna, Arapahoe and Shelton are rated among the Top 10 in C2. Also in the district is South Loup (13-6) who plays Burwell (16-4) at 7 p.m. tonight with the winner advancing to play top seed Ravenna (17-5) Tuesday night. Also Tuesday, Arapahoe (20-3) plays Shelton (19-2).
Sargent/Burwell's Jed Fenske was one of 15 area wrestlers to win a medal at the State Wrestling Tournament. Fenske's medal earned him the title of 'State Champion' as he won the Class C 145 pound class.
Sumner-Eddyville-Miller's Traven Claflin also wrestled for a state championship at 160 pounds in Class D. Claflin settled for the silver medal as runner up after losing a 10-2 major decision to State Champion Bryce Dibbern from Amherst.
Fifteen area wrestlers will compete for a medal Saturday with two wrestling for the state championship in their weight class. Sargent/Burwell's Jed Fenske (145) and SEM's Traven Claflin (160) will wrestle for the gold medal in the championship round beginning at 2:30 this afternoon.
Area wrestlers who will compete for the 3rd place medal will be Ansley/Arcadia's Ryan Hircock (189); Mullen's Jared Simonson (130) and Nick Licking (189); South Loup's Logan Glendy (145) and SEM's John Frerichs (145).

Fourteen area wrestlers will continue through the State tournament, which resumes at 5 p.m. today, after surviving the first and second round consolation matches earlier today. Four of those wrestlers are from Sargent/Burwell, they are Evan Gideon (103), Kirby Pomplun (119), Grady McIntosh (125) and Brett Mauler (160). Their wins today pushed Sargent/Burwell in the lead in the team standings, just four points ahead of Wood River. Seven of the nine Sargent/Burwell qualifiers are still in contention for a medal.
The Ansley Lady Warriors escaped a close game against the upset minded North Loup-Scotia Wildcats 43-39. The Lady Warrior advance to the D2-4 district final for a match-up with Wilcox-Hildreth who was a 64-52 winner over Loomis.
In other girls subdistrict action last night, the Sandhills/Thedford Lady Knights season came to an end with a 46-31 loss to Sutherland in the D1-11 subdistrict. The season also ended for the Mullen Lady Broncos who lost to Cody-Kilgore 35-32 in the D2-11 subdistrict.
The Sargent/Burwell Horndogs had three wrestlers advance to the championship semifinals to guarantee themselves a medal. The Horndogs also sit in second place in the team standings just four points behind Wood River after the first two rounds of competition. The three wrestlers who advanced to the championship semifinals are Justin Miller (112), Jed Fenske (145) and Tanner Balfour (152).
