It was a rough morning for the area Class D wrestlers. Of the 10 wrestlers who entered into the consolation round , only one survived the morning to move to the next step at the State Wrestling finals from the Century Link Center in Omaha. All were hard fought rounds. Each of these athletes gave their all resulting in a number of heartbreakers. Competition at this level is tough.

Sandhills/Thedford picked the perfect time to get their only win of the season against Mullen- in the subdistrict final. The Knights earned the 64-52 victory, due in large part to a 22-229 performance from the line. Mullen, by comparison shot 4-11 from the charity stripe.
Kelsey Higgins and Kaitlin Marten lead the way with 19 and 18 points respectively. Avery Taylor had 12 to go with six from Sarah Miles. Shaina Simonson had five while Taylor Marten had four.

Dakota Divine (285) was the lone wrestler for Sargent/Burwell to advance to the semi finals of the state tournament Friday. Divine got his victories with a 53-second and 1:58 second pin. He will take on another area wrestler in the semi finals in the form of Clayton Lange from Ord who came in with a record of 24-1.

Arcadia/Loup City's Wyatt Lane (106), S-E-M's Calvin Frerichs (152), South Loup's Garret Dockweiler (160) and S-E-M's Grant Clausen have secured places in the class D semi finals.
That leaves Mullen's Dalton Zimmerman (113), Arcadia Loup City's Tommy Roth, Ansley-Litchfield's Bo Slingsby (120), Mullen's Garrett Cox (152), Mullen's Gideon Monette (160), Anselmo-Merna's Jake Wells (160), Ansley-Litchfield's Matt Eberle (220) and Anselmo-Merna's Clinten Fales (285) to wrestle from the consolation round.

Every time Mullen senior Logan Ginkens steps on the basketball court, it isn't just the opposing team he will have to battle that night.
Ginkens was born with bilateral club feet, a condition causing the ankle to point downward and the toes to be pulled toward the inner leg and the bottom of the foot to face inward instead of downward. In addition, the tendons on the inside of the leg are shortened and the Achilles tendon is tighter than on an average human leg.
The feet are also usually very short and wide.

Area Schools qualified 18 wrestlers for the state tournament in Omaha Feb. 14-16 at the Centuylink Center. Sargent Burwell sent the most with seven and Anselmo-Merna's Jake Wells has the best record going into state at 36-0.

It was reported in the Feb. 7 edition of the Custer County Chief that the Broken Bow boys basketball team lost to Ogallala 59-39. Broken Bow was actually the winner of the game 59-39. The Chief apologizes for the error and any confusion it may have caused,

The Sandhills/Thedford boys basketball team and Mullen girls team, cut down the nets once again, becoming the 2013 LVC champions. Sandhills/Thedford won 54-39 and the Mullen girls won 42-31. Ansley-Litchfield took 3rd place for the girls side and South Loup beat Anselmo-Merna for 3rd place on the boys side
