The weather was perfect, the cars sufficiently noisy and the action right on target at the 2012 Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce Demolition Derby.
With over $6,000 in prize money sitting on the table, as well as several two foot tall trophies for bragging rights, the cars appeared.
For Duane Ducker of Broken Bow, this year marks his 32nd running of the Broken Bow Derby at the Custer County Fairgrounds, and his last. He can feel the hits in his back, he said following the end of the Hobo Class. He was passing the keys to his son Preston.
ARNOLD--There was a hot time heard and seen in the old town of Halsey Aug. 8 and 9, and it wasnâ€™t all from the heat.
Drivers and their cars went through technical and safety inspections at Halsey, Aug. 8, prior to the inaugural race of the Loup 2 Loup Open Road Challenge Aug.9. This race was the prelude to the 12th annual Sandhills Open Road Challenge (SORC) Friday and Saturday in Custer County.
Friday the one-mile shootout race took place between Callaway and Cozad. Then Saturday, the actual race on the county road between Arnold and Dunning was held.
ARNOLD--The Sandhills Open Road Challenge brought plenty of muscle power and speed to the Custer County area this past weekend. A new event called the Loup 2 Loup race, where drivers raced from Halsey to Purdum and back was added this year.
A half mile and one-mile shootout took place on Friday and the races continued on Saturday.
The results, starting with the Loup to Loup are as follows:

2. Nick Eckberg/ Kyle Eckberg- 1965 Corvette- Wakefield
Baseball is a game of failure.
This is no secret to anyone who knows the game; who h as been around it as long as Jerry Pomplun has.
Pomplun, who finished his 9th season as Broken Bowâ€™s Legion baseball coach this past summer, chalked up yet another successful season.
In a game full of failures, Broken Bow- the smallest school under the Class B roof,-has seen plenty of successes under Pomplun.
In his nine seasons, Broken Bow has been to the district championship six times, winning three of them.
A new season of league bowling is set to get underway. A meeting of the local Bowling Association will take place Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, beginning at 7 p.m. at Pleasure Lanes in Broken Bow.
Broken Bow has made a number of hires and moves within its departments for this upcoming school year. Among them are Mike Miller, who will become the new head golf coach and Ryan Wetovick will be the new head coach of the boys basketball team. Miller will be assisted by Tim Johnson while Mike Buckles returns to coaching as the assistant boys basketball coach.
Broken Bow proved that they could play with the best of the Class B teams at the state tournament.
Their bats, just didn't seem to make the trip. Broken Bow's season ended with a 3-0 loss to Seward in the Class B State tournament.

Broken Bow stayed right with Roncalli for most of the game.
They held a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the 6th, but then surrendered four and were unable to recover.
Roncalli held on for the 6-3 victory.
Broken Bow will take on Seward tomorrow at 11 am in the losers bracket contest.
Broken Bow's Grayson Minnick spent most of the previous baseball season with a metal plate in his leg and a brace that restricted his motion. A snowboarding accident left him with a broken femur.
This season, he helped make sure he was part of the state tournament festivities.
After Broken Bow forced a deciding game in the district championship with rival Holdredge, Minnick came alive in the second and deciding game.
