Arcadia just couldn't catch a break.
Broken Bow's bats were too much to handle Wednesday night as the Spirit overpowered their foes, winning 19-9.
Third basemen Tressa Ripp had another fine offensive outing, tallying three singles and one doubles. She had plenty of help around here. Every batter finished with at least one hit and eight of the nine batters had at least one extra base hit.
"I think we had really good base-running and good hitting," shortstop Sydney Holcomb said. "Hannah and Jasmyn did really well on the mound too."
After a 5-3 loss to Kearney, Broken Bow rebounded to stay undefeated in league play with a 14-4 victory over Gothenburg on Saturday. Broken Bow will take on Ainsworth Sunday to cap a busy week of games for the team. For more coverage, check out the June 21 edition of the Custer County Chief.
The Broken Bow boys basketball camp will be held from June 20-22.
Grade Level schedule (as of fall 2012)
3rd-5th grade: 8 am- noon
6th- 8th grade: 1pm- 5pm
Total cost to attend both camps is $125 per camper
The camp will be lead by coach Hoffman, who has trained players from high school to professional and has gained recognition in Sports Illustrated.
Campers can expect to learn: fundamentals and advanced techniques to increase shooting range, gain confidence and be a more consistent shooter, offensive skills, ball handling skills, and passing skills.
Broken Bow fell to Kearney 5-3 Friday night. Kearney Little Ceaser's jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and Broken Bow never managed to recover. Nebraska State Bank made a slight push in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the score to 5-3 from a 5-1 deficit to start the inning, but were unable to recover. Broken Bow takes on Gothenburg Saturday at 3:30 pm at Tomahawk Park. Broken Bow beat Gothenburg on the road in their previous matchup. Spirit softball continued their impressive season with a 16-1 victory over Sargent/Burwell Wednesday night. Catcher Morgan Hueftle lead the way offensively with two doubles and 5 RBI's. The Sprit will take on Central City for the first game of Districts 8 am Saturday. For more coverage, check out the June 21st edition of the Custer County Chief.
During the normal work week, Broken Bow's Todd Vlieger earns his paycheck working at Arrow Seed. It's what he did this past weekend, however that will have people talking.
On June 9, Vlieger won the Kearney half marathon with a time of -. A half marathon is exactly 13.1 miles. In some distance races, the final stretch can be the worst of the race. That wasn't the case here.
"After running the 13 miles, the .1 isn't so bad," Vlieger said. "It's just an extra little bit."

Broken Bow's senior baseball team improved to 6-1 on the season with a sweep of McCook on Saturday. They won the first game 3-2 and the second game by the score of 8-2. Pitcher Kirby Pomplun took a no-hitter into the top of the 7th in the first game before McCook answered with two runs. The game ended on a Jake McCormick single up the middle to win it for Broken Bow. For more coverage, check out the June 14th edition of the Custer County Chief.
The Spirit softball team picked up two wins on back-to-back nights, beating Ord 11-9 Monday night and North Loup 8-0 Tuesday night. Against Ord, the Spirit took an 11-5 lead into the 7th and final inning. Ord put four runs on the board, but Broken Bow hung on for the victory. In the 8-0 win over North Loup, only one batter reached base and pitcher Hannah Evans struck out three batters while allowing no walks. 1st baseman Sami Gaston and shortstop/center fielder Kelsie Myers each had two RBI's.
