The Spirit softball team recovered from a tough first inning, where they allowed nine runs, to win 18-12 in the home opener against Ravenna. Further coverage will be provided in the June 7 edition of the Custer County Chief.
While the Spirit softball team didnâ€™t come away with a win in the tournament to open the season, they did come away with some valuable lessons.
â€śWeâ€™ve been working on covering the bases when the other team bunts a lot,â€ť said pitcher/shortstop Kelsie Myers.
In the teamâ€™s second round robin game against Alliance, errant throws in the infield aided an Alliance victory.
It was from this game that the team learned how to keep the runners contained
South Loup's Lane Gascoigne wound up finishing in a tie for 21st at the Class D state golf tournament. He shot an 82 the first day and an 89 on the second day of the tournament. As a team, South Loup finished 13th overall with a team total of 772. Mullen also was able to qualify for state as a team and they finished 15th. Their total score has not yet been determined. Broken Bow junior Tanner Johnson came into the state invite on a hot streak and the higher stakes didn't deter him. Johnson finished 4th overall today completing a todays round with a score of 76, five strokes lower than his first round. Sophomore Marcus Miller had a respectable finish as well, he tallied an 82 on the day. This was also five strokes lower than his first round. He finished tied for 27th. In team play, South Loup sits at 12th with a total of 383 and Mullen is in 15th with 429.
After the first round of play, Tanner Johnson sits tied for 10th overall with an 81. Marcus Miller is tied for 28th after the first round with an 87. According to the NSAA scoreboard, Johnson tees of at 11 am today and Miller tees off at 9:50 to start round 2.

The Twin Loup mens team finished 2nd overall for the Class D mens side. Ansley-Litchfield's women side took 4th overall. Twin Loup won state titles in the 4x400 meter relay and the long jump.
