Area schools qualify 56 for State Track Championships

Ten area schools will send 56 athletes to the 2011 NSAA State Track and Field Champ-ionships this weekend. The first session at the state meet begins with Classes C and A at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning at Omaha Burke Stadium.
Four South Loup Bobcats will kick off the action for area participants in Class C, they are Kali Blevins, Logan Glendy, Kyle Pierce and Brady Weinman.
The other 52 qualifiers will begin their quest to earn state medals tomorrow afternoon with Classes D and B events scheduled to begin at approximately 3 p.m.

Broken Bow resident tests endurance in Boston Marathon

Close to 27,000 runners, joggers, walkers and wheelchair racers gathered for the 115th Boston Marathon ran April 18. One of the 27,000 people adding some local flavor was Broken Bow resident Todd Vleiger.
Vleiger is often asked why he runs. His answer is short and simple: “I just love to run.”
Running is something that’s been a part of the Vleiger family for as long as he can remember.

Bobcats, Lady Warriors triumphant in LVC

BURWELL -- The South Loup Bobcats became the boys Loup Valley Conference Champions in Burwell last Thursday. The Bobcats battled the Sargent Bulldogs for the top spot all day but in the end the Bobcats 7.5 points better Bulldogs. In the girls race, the Ansley Lady Warriors ran away with the LVC team title taking charge of the event finals. The Lady Warriors tallied 121 points with the Sargent Lady Bulldogs coming in second with 96 points.
The top individual performers on the day were Sargent’s Jed and Guy Fenske along with Ansley’s Chelsea Entz and Siera Rohde.

Custer County Invite showcases LVC talent

BROKEN BOW -- The Custer County Invite was a preview of the talent that will be participating at the Loup Valley Conference tournament today in Burwell. Seven of the LVC teams competed in the Custer County Invite and the team races were just as close as the individual races. In the boys division, the South Loup Bobcats, who scored 161 points, were two points better than the second place Sargent Bulldogs. Ansley won the race for third as third through fifth place teams were separated by two and a half points.

Indians win home invite

BROKEN BOW -- The Broken Bow Indian golf team was victorious last Friday winning their home invite at the Broken Bow Country Club. The Indians shot a team low score of 339 which was 10 strokes better than second place Minden.
Three Indian golfers landed among the Top 10 individuals. Tanner Johnson finished in second place after carding a 79. He was followed closely by Marcus Miller who turned in an 80 score. Nate Hanson also finished in the Top 10 at sixth place shooting an 85. Kyle Mayor finished out the scoring for the Indians with a 95.

Mullen boys win Sandhills Conference championship

ARNOLD -- The Mullen Bronco boys team won the Sandhills Conference crown last Thursday scoring 156 points with Brady coming in second with 123. In the girls division, Brady won the conference title with 133 points while the Lady Broncos finished as the runner-up with 122 points.

Indian 1600m relay team, Dierking win SWC crown

GOTHENBURG -- The Broken Bow Indians 4x400 meter relay team along with Cody Dierking were Southwest Conference champions Saturday in Gothenburg. The two gold medals led the Indians to a third place finish in the boys division. Gothenburg won the conference title with Cozad finishing second. In the girls division, Cozad claimed the team title with the Lady Indians finishing fifth.

APA Pool League accepting team registrations

The Custer Co. Area APA Pool Leagues are now accepting team registrations for the upcoming Summer Session.
Registration deadline is Thursday, May 5th. Play begins in May and runs through August.
APA Pool Leagues that are available include Monday Open 8-Ball and Thursday Open 9-Ball. Other formats include Masters (no handicap), Ladies 8-Ball and Family 8-Ball (no age limit).

Lady Broncos sweep relays for team title, boys second

SUTHERLAND -- The Mullen Lady Broncos hit the trifecta sweeping all three relays for gold at the Wallace Invite in Sutherland. The three wins helped the Lady Broncos score 113 points to win the team title. In the boys division, the Broncos placed second in each of the three relays and finished second in the team standings behind Paxton.

Knights win several medals at Brady-Gothenburg Invite

GOTHENBURG -- The Sandhills/Thedford Knight’s track team participated in the Brady-Gothenburg Invite last Thursday. The Lady Knights scored 68 points for third place behind Brady and Maxwell. The Knight boys team placed fifth with 17 points.
Double medal winners in individual eventâs for the Lady Knights were Danya Mintle in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, Sarah Miles in the 100 and 400 meter dashes, Valerie Matulka in the 800 and 1600 meter runs, Jacy Spencer in the 300 meter hurdles and high jump, and Chantelle Milleson in the shot put and discus.
