GRAND ISLAND -- At noon Saturday, Ansley and Dodge met in the consolation game for third place in the D2 tournament Grand Island Northwest High School.
Dodge got off to a strong start winning the first two sets. In the first set, Dodge, leading 15-14 went on a 5-1 run. The Lady Warriors closed Dodgeâ€™s lead to 23-20 before Dodge scored the final two points. The second set nearly mirrored the first. Both teams were tied at 11 before Dodge put together another 5-1 run. Late in the set, Ansley narrowed the Dodge lead to 23-21 before Dodge scored the final two points.
The Ansley Lady Warriors and Mullen Lady Broncos return to the state volleyball tournament after each won district championships last Thursday. The state tournament, which has moved to Grand Island and Hastings in 2010 and 2011, begins tonight with both Ansley and Mullen among the eight teams in the Class D2 tournament field.
The Loup Valley Conference is guaranteed to be represented in the Class D2 championship game as Mullen and Sargent both advanced with decisive wins in the playoff quarterfinals. The LVC is assured a position in the title game because Mullen and Sargent must meet on the gridiron for the second time this season. The winner will advance to play the winner of Howells vs Giltner at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln Nov. 15 at 10:15 a.m.
OVERTON -- The dream season for South Loupâ€™s football team came to an end Tuesday night. The Bobcatâ€™s traveled to Overton for the Class D1 quarterfinal game.
South Loup opened the game with a good kickoff return near mid-field. Then on the third play from scrimmage, Logan Glendy broke out to a 35-yard touchdown run.
The Nebraska Team took first place with 65 points to win the 50th Nebraska One Box Pheasant Hunt. Captain of the team was Matt Thomas. Team members were J.C. Ourada, Kent Leibhart, George W. Doyle and John Anderson. Guides for the team were Mike Holcomb and Jeff Evans, Dog Handler was Josh Robertson and the Scorekeeper was Todd Fenton.
The Ansley Lady Warriors and Mullen Lady Broncos are returning to the State Volleyball Tournament next weekend in Grand Island.
Ansley defeated Loomis in straight sets last night 25-11, 25-15 and 25-20 for the Class D2-4 District Championship.
Mullen defeated Hay Springs 3-1 for the Class D2-6 District Championship.
The tournament pairings for the Class D2 field has been set with Ansley earning the No. 4 seed and Mullen getting the No. 8 seed.
Three area teams remain in the state football playoffs and will hit the road for quarterfinal games Tuesday night. Mullen, Sargent and South Loup cruised to impressive victories with all three winning by large margins.
In the Class D2 playoff, Mullen was a 40-14 winner over Brady and will travel to Loomis for a 6 p.m. game Tuesday night. Loomis was a 19-18 winner over West No. 2 seed St. Mary's.
Sargent easily won the battle of the Bulldog's 58-7. Sargent will head to Eustis to play the West No. 1 seed Eustis-Farnam Knights at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Three area volleyball teams remain in the hunt for a trip to the State Tournament in Grand Island next weekend. In Broken Bow, Ansley and Sargent will meet at 7 p.m. tonight with the winner to advance to the Class D2-4 District Final. Top seed, Ansley advanced to the subdistrict final with a 3-0 win over North Loup-Scotia who had eliminated Loup County 3-0 earlier. The Sargent Lady Bulldogs eliminated Arcadia in a five set thriller 3-2 to advance.
All 11 area volleyball teams will be in action tonight as subdistrict action begins. In Class C1-11, the Broken Bow Lady Indians travel to North Platte H.S. for a 5 p.m. game against Cozad with the winner to play Hershey at 8 p.m.
In C2-10 at Kearney Catholic, South Loup plays Ravenna at 5 p.m. If South Loup wins, they will play Burwell at 7:30 p.m.
In D1-11 at Gothenburg, Sandhills/Thedford meets Maxwell at 5 p.m. with the winner to play Cambridge at 7:30 p.m.
In D2-7 at Minden, Litchfield plays Pleasanton at 5 p.m. with the winner to play Loomis at 7:30 p.m.
The South Loup Bobcats advanced to the second round of the Class D1 Football Playoffs. The Bobcats defeated Clearwater/Orchard 55-14 and will host Kenesaw Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Arnold. Kenesaw was a 58-42 winner over Sandhills/Thedford. The Knights' season ends with a 4-5 record.
