Senator Deb Fischer was officially sworn-in January 3, as a United States senator in the U.S. Capitol by Vice President Joseph Biden. Fischer was escorted by Nebraska's Senior senator, Mike Johanns, and former Nebraska Senator David Karnes. The ceremony marked the official commencement of Fischer's six-year term, as well as the start of the 113th Congress. Senator Fischer, a lifelong Nebraskan and former two-term state senator, was joined for the swearing-in ceremony by her husband Bruce, family, and friends. Upon conclusion of the ceremony, Senator Fischer released the following statement:

Mullen's girls basketball team stayed undefeated with a 55-36 victory while Sandhills/Thedford's boys team picked up their third straight win with a 50-40 victory over Mullen. For more information, check out the next edition of the Custer County Chief.
Sandhills/Thedford got off to a fast start out of the holiday break as the boys team defeated South Loup 73-41 and the girls finished with a 58-29 victory. Jacki Kay Giles, daughter of Rich and Kristi Giles of Halsey, and Kevin Andrew Shelbourn, son of Jerry and Lori Shelbourn of Valentine, would like to announce their engagement and upcoming wedding. The bride-to-be is a 2009 graduate of Sandhills High School and will graduate this spring from Hastings College with a bachelorâ€™s degree in business administration and human resource management.
The perspective groom is a 2006 graduate of Valentine Rural High School and is currently employed by Oâ€™Kief Brothers of Wood Lake.
The couple is planning a June 1, 2013 wedding.
Jamie Ost and Nathan Rooney are pleased to announce their engagement and upcoming wedding. The bride-to-be is the daughter of Darwin Ost of Fredonia, N.D. and Elaine Ost of Kulm, N.D. She is the granddaughter of the late Art and Pauline Ost of Kulm, N.D. and Lillian Roth and the late Jack Roth of Boise, Idaho.
The bride-elect is a 2007 graduate of Kulm High School in Kulm, N.D., and a May 2012 graduate of the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture.
Megan Carr and Kevin Beres, both of Kansas City, are planning an April 27, 2013, wedding at Country Club Christian Church in Kansas City. Parents of the couple are Dixie Carr and Marvin Carr, both of Kearney, and John and Karen Beres of Milwaukee. Meganâ€™s grandparents are Norland and Dorothy Carr of Broken Bow.
The future bride graduated from Kearney High School in 2005, and from UNK in 2009 with a bachelor of science degree in industrial distribution. She currently works as a sales engineer at Eaton Corp. in Kansas City.
Sydnee Faith Owens, 14 of Aurora, went to her eternal home Nov. 30, 2012, after a courageous 6 1/2-year battle with cancer. A Celebration of Life was Dec. 4 at the Monroe E-Free Church near Phillips. Family and friends were encouraged to wear pink in honor of Sydneeâ€™s favorite color. Rev. Marshall Erickson officiated. Interment was at the Aurora Cemetery.
