PTA launches Box Tops fundraiser

With all the talk of violence in our schools, and how to combat that issue, it now seems more important than ever to implement programs both at home and at school to teach kids proper values. That is exactly what the Kids of Character program at the Broken Bow elementary schools is all about.

Bill would give $20 million to early childhood education

LINCOLN - State lawmakers introduced more than 30 bills and elected Sen. Jim Scheer of Norfolk as vice chairman of the Education Committee on Jan. 14, the fourth day of the 103rd legislative session. Among the new bills to be considered is a $20 million appropriation for early childhood education. Here are some of the day's highlights.



LB171: Sponsored by Sen. Dave Bloomfield of Hoskins, this bill would expedite the concealed handgun permit process − from 45 days to five days − for applicants who are victims of domestic violence.

John Wesley Churchill, 91

John Wesley Churchill, age 91 of Broken Bow Ne. went to be with the Lord on January 8, 2013.

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away"
Revelation 21 v: 4

John Churchill was born Feb. 11, 1920, in Mount Vernon, NY, to the late Solomon and Edna Churchill and was the youngest of five children.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Jordan Churchill, Charles Churchill, Edna Churchill, and Alexander Churchill.

Katrina Gotschall, a 1998 Broken Bow High School alumni, is the owner and artist behind Katrina Lee Photography and Grassroots Images, a custom photography business specializing in creating art that celebrates people’s stories.  
Living in Atkinson with her husband Scott and two boys Carter and Alex, Katrina has been teaching Literature and Photojournalism at O’Neill High School for the last eight years. Her roots in Custer County bring her home often, and while in the area, she enjoys spending time photographing the people and rural landscapes that she holds most dear.

Centura boys outlast Broken Bow

Broken Bow used its fullcourt press to twice get back into the game Friday night against Centura. The team using an effective full court press, coupled with 21 points from Miller were almost enough to get Broken Bow the win, but Centura was able to survive and salt the game away on free throws, winning 50-41. For more details, see the next edition of the Custer County Chief.

Malachi James Kringle

Byron and Ashley (Marple) Kringle of Lincoln are proud to announce the birth of their son, Malachi James. Malachi was born Oct. 19, 2012, and weighed 7 pounds 3 ounces, and was 20 inches long. He is also welcomed home with love by his big sister, Kyla. Proud grandparents are Jerry and Debra Marple of Broken Bow, and Ron and Jean Kringle of Lincoln. Great-grandparents include Pat Gamble of Broken Bow and Don and Phyllis Orr of Greeley, Colo.

Deb Mayor of Broken Bow, and Bob Mayor of Torrington, Wyo., would like to announce the engagement of their daughter, Barbara “Erin” Mayor, to Derrick Clem; both live in Belleville, Ill.
Erin is a 2006 graduate of Broken Bow High School and 2011 graduate of UNL. She is employed as a Team Leader Quality for ConAgra Mills in Chester, Ill.
Grandparents of the bride-to-be are Beulah and the late Kenneth Eggleston of Oconto, and the late Barbara and H. L. Mayor of Buffalo, Wyo.

Travis Sterner of Merna and Wynne Klug of Columbus were united in marriage by the Rev. Aaron Witt Nov. 17, 2012, at Christ Lutheran Church in rural Columbus.
Parents of the couple are Ed Sterner of North Platte and Linda Sterner of Merna, and Jim and Ivy Klug of Columbus. Grandparents are Marvin and Esther Sterner, and Everett and Arlene Moninger of Merna, and Ruth Bakenhus of Columbus.

Julia Amanda Dobesh and Alex David Bauer were united in marriage July 27, 2012, in a 4:30 p.m. ceremony at Christ United Methodist Church in Lincoln.
The bride is the daughter of Dale and Kathy Dobesh of Ansley. She is a graduate of the University of Nebraska Kearney and is currently employed at US Bank.
Grandparents of the bride are Virgil and Edith Ann Sims of Holdrege and Glenn and Jo Rhode of Sumner.
