OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Voters have approved a measure raising Nebraska's minimum wage to $9 an hour by 2016.
The measure won Tuesday despite opposition from most Republican officials and business leaders, who argued it would hurt companies and force them to cut jobs.
Supporters countered that the increase from the current minimum wage of $7.25 was needed because Nebraska workers who earn that much are struggling. They contended the increased wage could make a significant difference to workers while causing little harm to businesses.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska's open U.S. Senate seat and two of its three House seats will remain in Republican hands, but the close race in Omaha's congressional district could keep election watchers up late.
Republican Ben Sasse easily won election to the U.S. Senate over Democrat David Domina.
Sasse, the president of Midland University in Fremont, will replace Republican Mike Johanns, who didn't seek a second term.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Republican Adrian Smith had no trouble winning election to a fifth term representing Nebraska's sprawling 3rd Congressional District.
Voters Tuesday favored Smith over Democrat Mark Sullivan, a feedlot owner and former member of the Nebraska Air National Guard.
It was the second time the two had faced each other for a chance to represent the district, which includes about three-fourths of Nebraska. In 2012, Smith won easily.
In his campaign, Smith argued for repealing the Affordable Care Act, cutting the federal debt and reducing regulations.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Republican Pete Ricketts, a multimillionaire former executive at TD Ameritrade, has been elected governor of Nebraska.
Voters on Tuesday chose Ricketts, of Omaha, over Democrat Chuck Hassebrook, who for decades headed a center in Lyons that advocated for family farms and rural communities.
Ricketts will replace Republican Dave Heineman, who served nine years as governor but is being forced out by term limits.
The following is a note from the Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce:
"Tim and Ed Hit the Road" will be at the South Adams Lot at the top of the 5 p.m. hour. They will be at the Square at 6 p.m.
The Chamber has people lined up for them to visit with and would like to thank Prairie Grounds for offering to bring a hot drink to welcome them to Broken Bow.
At 6:10 p.m., they will walk across the street to the Bonfire/Arrow Hotel. Mike Borders will join them to talk about the One Box Hunt and the Bonfire will be giving them a "taste" of some Nebraska beef and pork.
NOTE: Local and statewide election results results will be posted this evening on the Custer County Chief website as they become available.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Republicans were expected to easily win an open U.S. Senate seat and retain two of Nebraska's three U.S. House seats Tuesday, but the race for the congressional district that includes Omaha provided some Election Day suspense.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska man convicted of shooting a bald eagle and a rough-legged hawk earlier this year has been given eight months in prison.
U.S. Attorney Deborah R. Gilg said Monday that 45-year-old Lamar Bertucci's sentence will be followed by one year of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $6,500 in restitution.
Bertucci pleaded guilty this year to violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. He is accused of shooting the bald eagle in February. An investigation into his activities yielded the rough-legged hawk.
