Faulty battery believed cause of car fire

The Broken Bow Fire Department was called to the scene of a vehicle fire Monday afternoon in the 700 block of North 10th Avenue.
The call came in of a car on fire at 4:12 p.m. Monday. The Broken Bow Fire Department arrived to find the 1976 Monte Carlo with fire in the engine compartment. The cause of the fire was determined to be a short in the battery.
A total of three fire trucks, nine firemen and two ambulances responded to the call, which came just as the department was finishing up a previous car accident assignment.

PLAYOFF RESULTS: Sargent advances to state semi-finals; South Loup season comes to end

Sargent downed Medicine Valley 58-13 to advance to the D2 state semi-finals. They will host Loomis Monday night in Sargent.

South Loup suffered a 30-0 loss to top-ranked Elgin/Elgin Pope John. South Loup finishes their season with a 9-2 mark.

No injuries in rollover

Broken Bow Rescue was called to the scene of a one vehicle rollover accident Monday afternoon at around 3:30 p.m.
Johnie Sikes, 66 of Anselmo, was driving a 2009 Dodge pickup approximately six and a half miles west of Broken Bow on Highway 2, when he lost control and rolled the pickup one and a half times. The pickup came to rest on the drivers side in the ditch on the north side of the highway, near the railroad tracks.

Helping kids eat healthier

Students at Custer Elementary School in Broken Bow were treated to delicious fruit smoothies last week from Grocery Kart, as part of a campaign to encourage youngsters to make healthier food choices. Kenny Crawford, frozen foods manager at GK, was on hand to make smoothies, and some of the kids got to help out.
Kenny, a father himself, believes it is important to equip kids to make good decisions when it comes to what they eat, and was happy to be part of this program.

Public hearings set for pipeline legislation

The Nebraska Legislature announced the dates and times of public hearings on legislation introduced this week concerning oil pipelines.
Gov. Dave Heineman called the special session in light of TransCanada’s proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline route, which has grown in controversy in recent months. The governor atypically called the session without proposing any legislation.
The Unicameral will convene next week Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9 a.m. in the Legislative chamber before public hearings are held.

Community invites all eaters!

Broken Bow's Thanksgiving Dinner Committee is busy gearing up in preparation for the Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner, Thursday, Nov. 24. The dinner is served at the Broken Bow Municipal Auditorium and is open to anyone and everyone. Serving will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Volunteers are needed for the Community Thanksgiving Dinner. If you would like to help, here is how to get involved:

Bow welcomes One Box Pheasant Hunters

As you make your way around Broken Bow this weekend, you're likely to notice lots of individuals dressed in camouflage as the community welcomes hunting enthusiasts from all across the U.S. for the 51st Annual One Box Pheasant Hunt.
There will be eight teams competing in this year’s event for the third time in the event’s 51 years, said Thomas McCaslin, event chair.
“The momentum is there. There will be lots of good shooters competing.”

Trevor L. Haller, 17 of Kearney passed away November 1, 2011 at his home. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, November 4, 2011 at the Evangelical Free Church with the Revs. Mike Shields and Tim Stratton officiating. Visitation is 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the O'Brien-Straatmann-Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney. Interment will be at the Kearney Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family in lieu of flowers.
