Michael Sittler, 53

Michael Joseph Sittler was born Jan. 11, 1958, at the Broken Bow Community Hospital and left this life Aug. 10, 2011, at the Avera McKenna Hospice House in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Michael graduated from Anselmo-Merna High School with the class of 1976. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, raising hogs and rodeos. He liked to joke and have a good time.
He resided in South Dakota at the time of his death, and was employed by New Fashion Pork, Inc.

Open house provides public forum

Following the results of a community wide telephone survey regarding the facility needs of Broken Bow Public Schools, the school board agreed to take another bond issue proposal to the voters. During an Open House at North Park school Tuesday evening, details of the bond issue were outlined to a large number of district patrons.

Hartman takes crayfish to conference

Broken Bow 4th grade teacher Jim Hartman knows his crawdads - and any kid who has gone through his science class knows all about them too.
For more than 20 years Hartman has been using the little crustacians to teach his students a variety of science lessons with hands-on, fun experiments using crayfish. This month, Hartman will be presenting a workshop on that subject at the Nebraska Association of Teachers of Science State Conference.

Never to young to help meet a need

Hunger knows no boundaries. A group of neighborhood friends in Broken Bow realized that too, and decided to come together and do something about it. The kids hang out and play together nearly every day, but on one Saturday afternoon they had even more fun, they say, working to help someone else.
Results of a new study supported by the ConAgra Foods Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Found-ation and Nielsen shows approximately 20 percent of children in Nebraska under the age of 18 are at-risk for hunger.

Dan Slagle, 59

Dan Bruce Slagle, age 59 of Sargent, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Dan was born April 17, 1952, in Loup City, to Paul and Ardes (Huffman) Slagle. he attended country school at West Union and then at Sargent Public School, where he graduated in 1970.
As a youth, he was active in many school activities, including FFA and sports. During the summer months, Dan and his younger brother, Tim, helped on the family farm and participated in 4-H.

E. Ray Brown, 89

August 26, 2011

E. Ray Brown, age 89 of Broken Bow, died Saturday Aug. 20, 2011 in Milford.
Funeral services were Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. in Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Mary Jane Gockley officiating. Burial was in the Janesville Cemetery at Berwyn, with Military Honors.
Memorials have been established to the Mid Nebraska Individual Services or the Broken Bow Fire and Rescue Units.
Ray is survived by his daughters, Sabra Hughes of Milford and Nedra (Don) Wilcox of Omaha; son, Doran (Julie) Brown of Hickman; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

H. Duane Cantrell, 64

Harold Duane Cantrell died of a stroke at Wyoming Medical Center Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011. A memorial service was held Friday, Aug. 19, at Word Christian Fellowship, with Associate Pastor Angela Haigler officiating.
Duane was born May 26, 1947, in Broken Bow, the son of Harold F. Cantrell and Freda M. (Embree) Cantrell. Duane graduated from high school in Merna, and attended classes at Casper College in Wyoming.
Duane married Phyllis J. Konings, and their union produced four daughters. They were divorced after 22 years of marriage.

Charles Craig, 62

Charles E. Craig, 62 of Lincoln formerly of Broken Bow, passed to the house of the Lord Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at Bryan LGH in Lincoln.
Services were Aug. 24, at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton with the Rev. Valjean Warman officiating. Burial was at the Belgrade Main Cemetery with military rites near Belgrade.

Gary Story, 65

Gary W. Story, age 65, of Kearney died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011 at his residence. Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 22, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Kearney with the Rev. Loren Betz, 78

Loren Eugene Betz, age 78, formerly of Estes Park, Colo., passed away Aug. 19, 2011, at home in Broken Bow.
Loren was born Dec. 24, 1932, in Broken Bow to Alfred and Ethel Buckner Betz. He attended Broken Bow schools, graduating in 1951. Loren, who was recruited to play football, received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, in 1955. He was a First Lieutenant in the U. S. Army from 1956-1958.
August 1, 1960, he married Thelma L. Coffman in Englewood, Colo. To this union three children were born: Lisa, Paula and David.
