April 13, 2011

Donald Bennett, 88 of Kearney, died Friday, April 8, 2011, at his residence in Kearney. Services were Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at O'Brien - Straatmann Funeral Home in Kearney with the Rev. Gary Main officiating. Interment was April 13 at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Pleasanton, with military honors provided by the Pleasanton American Legion. O'Brien - Straatmann Funeral Home of Kearney was in charge of arrangements.

Doris L. Spencer, 83

April 8, 2011

Doris L. Spencer, age 83 of Brewster, died March 27, 2011, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell. Funeral services were Saturday April 2, at the Community Building in Brewster with the Rev. Alan Petersen officiating. Interment was in the Brewster Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Hereford Youth Foundation or American Legion Post #323.

LaVerna Hodson, 68

LaVerna M. Hodson, age 68 of Broken Bow, died Thursday March 31, 2011, at the Golden Living Center in Broken Bow.
Funeral services were Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Mark Stones officiating. Burial was in the Taylor Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of arrangements. Memorials have been suggested to the One Child Campaign, in Tulsa, Okla.
LaVerna Mae Cook Hodson, 68, known to many for her candor, unique sense of humor, and love of life, went home to dance with the angels March 31, 2011.

Charles Lymber, 57

Charles A. Lymber, 57, passed away March 4, 2011, at his home at Lometa, Texas from a sudden heart attack.
Military services were held at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killen Texas, March 11, 2011.
Chuck was known in the Texas community as a prayer warrior; he truly loved his Lord and his country. He touched a lot of lives and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

H.B. "Budd" Watson, 88

A memorial reception for H.B. “Budd” Watson, age 88 of Albion, will be Friday, April 8, 2011, from 5-8 p.m. at the Albion Country Club in Albion.
Inurnment will be in the sea around Ireland, with Iverson Memorial Chapel of Broken Bow in charge of arrangements. A memorial has been established to the Nebraska Veterans Home.
Budd is survived by two sons, Bill (Joan) Watson of Ansley, and Henry (Vania) Watson of Fontaleza, Brazil; and seven grandchildren.

Mary Lou "Micky" Fisher, 83

Mary Lou "Micky" Fisher, age 83 of Halsey, died April 4, 2011, at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Funeral services will be Monday, April 11, 2011 at 2 p.m. in the Sandhills Community Church in Dunning with Pastor Lee Wonch officiating. Burial will be in the Purdum Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, April 10, from 1 to 6 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials have been established to the Sandhills Community Church in Dunning.

Cora L. Osterhoudt, age 80 of Kearney, died Friday, April 1, 2011 in Kearney. Funeral services will be Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Kearney with Pastor Eric Lesher officiating. Graveside services and burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the Maywood Cemetery in Maywood.

No middle ground for Ron Brown

Nebraska Husker running back coach, Ron Brown was the guest speaker at the Husker Football Roundup sponsored by the Broken Bow Evangelical Free Church. Nearly 150 people were in attendance for the event at Huckleberry’s Hideout Saturday evening.
The evening began with a buffet dinner followed by Husker trivia given by Broken Bow’s Dan Anderson and Scott Harvey. During the dinner, the guests were treated to a video of great Husker moments from the 1990s.

Being cyber-safe is more than creating unique passwords and usernames. It is being aware of the threats associated with online and electronic communication and how to avoid them. A social media awareness evening last week sponsored by Healing Hearts and Families, and Safe Communities for Custer County drove the point home.
