Eleanor I. Haskell, 99

April 30, 2012

Eleanor Irene Yearick Haskell passed away at the Kearney Good Samaritan Hospital April 17, 2012 at the age of 99.
Eleanor was born Sept. 5, 1912, at Pender, to George and Evelyn Gatzmeyer Yearick. Her early childhood was spent in eastern Nebraska.
Eleanor graduated from Burwell High School in 1931. After high school she received a teaching certificate and taught in rural schools in Brown County.

Rotary launches in Broken Bow

A new Rotary Club is in the process of being chartered in Broken Bow. The Club needed 25 members to form and the magic number has been reached, but there is room for more. The cutoff date to be a Charter member is May 1. Proposed child labor regulations withdrawn

Late in the day April 26th, the U.S. Department of Labor withdrew proposed regulations of Child Labor in Agriculture. Nebraska Cattlemen submitted comments in opposition to the proposed regulations last fall when they were first introduced. These comments were among thousands that the Department of Labor received.

Grange hosts Wind Farm forum

WEISSERT -- John Richards of Nebraska Public Power District presented NPPD’s approach to wind development to the Weissert Grange community April 20. John is an engineer of renewable energy development. His goal through his presentation was to educate Weissert’s citizens on the many benefits of wind generated power.

Wayne E. Catlett, 86

Wayne Edward Catlett was born at Ansley, July 31, 1925, the youngest child of William and Esther (Hanson) Catlett. He attended school at Broken Bow and Tappan Valley.

Ruth E. Crone, 85

April 27, 2012

Ruth E. Crone, age 85 of Callaway formerly of Merna, died April 26, 2012, at the Callaway Good Samaritan Center. Graveside funeral services will be Monday, April 30, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Grandview Cemetery at Anselmo with the Rev. D.R. Nelson officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 1 - 7 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5 - 7 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary. Interment will be at the Grandview Cemetery.

Donna J. Eggleston, 95

Donna Jeanette Eggleston, age 95 of Omaha, formerly of Ansley, died April 24, 2012, at Brookstone Meadows in Omaha where she has lived the past three
years. She was born Dec. 5, 1916, in Washington, Iowa, to Arthur and Monica (Shelby) Carpenter. She grew up in Comstock, and spent most of her life in Ansley on her husband's family farm.
She was preceded in death by husband Clarence Eggleston; grandson Reed Eggleston; brothers, Charles, Arthur, Walter and Harry Carpenter; sisters, Virginia Pierce, Elizabeth Carpenter and Ruth Tisher.

Senate passes postal reform; big news for newspapers!

WASHINGTON - By just two votes more than the minimum required, the U.S. Senate Wednesday passed S 1789, the bipartisan 21st Century Postal Act, 62 to 37. NNA (National Newspaper Association) President Reed Anfinson, publisher of the Swift County Monitor-News in Benson, Minn., hailed the Senate's vote as a critical step toward restoring the U.S. Postal Service to soundness.

Charles and Amee (Wonch) Hall of McCook, proudly announce the birth of a baby girl. Livia Lee Hall was born March 29, 2012, at Tri Valley Hospital in Cambridge. She weighed 7 pounds 14 ounces and was 20 inches long. Proud grandparents are Rodney Wonch, and Jody and Ken Slingsby, all of Ansley, Lyman Hall of Culbertson, and Liz Moffett of Trout, La.. Great-grandparents are Maxine Wonch, and Gale and Judy Moody.

Melissa Dawn Fellows and Kenneth James Crawford are pleased to announce their engagement and upcoming marriage. The bride-to-be is currently employed as a CNA/ER tech at Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
The prospective groom is employed as frozen food manager at Grocery Kart in Broken Bow.
The couple plans to be married May 26, 2012, in a 4 p.m. ceremony in the Broken Bow City Square Park. Pastor Mike Wheatly will officiate.
Flower girl for the wedding will be Kaytee Crawford, and ring bearers will be Zakary and Shaun Crawford, all children of the groom.
