Roger Krout, 69

June 17, 2011

Roger John Krout, 69 of Arnold, passed away June 8, 2011, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He was born March 22, 1942, in Storm Lake, Iowa, to John (Jack) W. and Ann Mary Gstohl Krout. He grew up in Marathon and Lake Park, Iowa, and graduated from high school in Lake Park.
Roger joined the Army March 5, 1964, and served during the Vietnam War He was honorably discharged March 2, 1966.
Roger was united in marriage to Marla Hall Sheets in 1981, in Arnold. The couple lived in Arnold where he was employed by the Nebraska Department of Roads and later became crew chief.

Gary Kucera, 63

June 17, 2011

Gary Kucera, age 63 of Broken Bow, formerly of Crete, died Friday, June 10, 2011, at the Golden Living Center in Broken Bow.
Graveside services were Tuesday, June 14, at the Wilber Czech Cemetery with the Rev. Lila Bottolfsen officiating. Burial was in the Wilber Czech Cemetery.
Gary was born at Crete, June 29, 1947, to Louis and Gertrude (Cizek) Kucera. He attended school in Crete. Gary worked for several years as a meat cutter.
Gary is survived by his cousin, Connie Anderson of Ayr.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Anastasia "Ann" Gates, 84

June 17, 2011

Graveside funeral services for Anastasia "Ann" Gates will be June 19, 2011, at 4:30 p.m. at the Gates Cemetery.
Mrs. Gates was born July 2, 1926, at Anselmo, to Charles and Anna Mohatt. She graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1944.
She was united in marriage to Dillard Gates Jan. 27, 1946.
Ann is survived by her husband, Dillard; two sons, Howe (LeeAnn), Charles and grandchildren Laura, Gregory, and Allison Gates all of Vancouver, Wash.; three sisters, Mary Schmitz, Charlene Bendig, and Joan Hammond.

Pamela K. Brown, 58

June 17, 2011

Pamela K. Brown was born Sept. 12, 1952, and passed away June 10, 2011.
Pam was active in the Omaha community since moving there in 1976.
About the time the early childhood legislation passed, Pam was selected as the regional public policy liaison for the Association of Junior Leagues. Pam was elected president of the Junior League of Omaha and was also named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Omahans.

Delores Huhman, 80

June 17, 2011

Delores Yvonne Huhman, age 80 of Ansley, died June 8, 2011, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow. Memorial services were June 11, at Govier Brothers Chapel with Father Jim Hunt officiating. Inurnment was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Operation Christmas Child.

State loses advocate with Broken Bow ties

One of the state’s most influential women, and a native of Broken Bow, passed away June 10. Pamela K. Brown was born Sept. 12, 1952.
She was the wife of Steve Brown of Omaha, daughter-in-law of the late Paul and Betty Brown, and daughter of Norma Kemp and the late Paul Kemp, all of Broken Bow.

•Regional Hero Flight includes several area veterans

December 7, 1941, is often referred to as America’s longest day. The attack that day on Pearl Harbor began our involvement in World War II.
During World War II, 85 percent of our nation’s families had someone serving in active duty. Nearly 60 years after the end of that war, a memorial to those who served was finally erected in Washington, D.C. Last week, 20 WW II veterans from central Nebraska had the privilege of making the trip to Washington to visit that memorial.

CC Ag Society announces 2011 fair entertainer

The Custer County Ag Society this week announced the headline act for this year’s Custer County Fair entertainment. Hardcore country traditionalist, Daryle Singletary, will perform Saturday, July 30, at the Custer County Fairgrounds.

Horizon Ag/Pioneer Seed outgrows old building

MERNA - - A new office building with a focus on Ag, located on state Highway 2 between Broken Bow and Merna, is now open and operational.
A vision of Joe and Deb Grantzinger, the building itself features an entrance area complete with reception and ag displays, four large offices, a large conference room, a break room, handicap bathroom facilities and a 60 x 150-foot warehouse.The warehouse is where Joe stores the corn and soybeans and where the soybeans are treated.
More soybeans are being planted today and that was one of the factors considered when Joe built the building.

Broken Bow tops McCook and Lex

MCCOOK- - The Broken Bow Senior baseball team went two and one over the weekend.
Broken Bow traveled to McCook this past Saturday for a doubleheader. Bow dropped the first game 13-11. McCook struck in the first inning with two runs.
Neither team scored in the second inning, but the fireworks started in the third inning for both teams.
