Reichenberg retires - - BBPS has excellent retention rate

Carol Reichenberg began her teaching career in Broken Bow in 1977. This Friday she will bid a fond farewell to the school that has provided her income and fulfilled her passion for the past 34 years.
Carol is a native of North Platte, and says she knew from the time she was in 7th grade that she one day wanted to be a teacher. When she was in high school she helped as an aid in the special ed classroom, as she was thinking of going into that area. But it didn’t take long for her to realize her true passion was elementary kids.

Joe Burnett, 87

Joe Burnett was born Nov. 24, 1923, at Berwyn, the second child of Douglas and Maymae Pracht Burnett. He went to school and grew up around Berwyn.
He enlisted in the Army, served in WWII, and after his completed duty he returned to his family home at Merna.
He was united in marriage to Reva Payne April 23, 1958. To this union six children were born: Clifford (Vickie) Burnett of Merna, Carla (Allen) Williams of Merna, Elaine (Matt) Schoenrock of Cortland, Carole (Mark) Porter of Merna, Dale (Angela) Burnett of Anselmo and Marla (Jim) Dutton of Grand Island.

Ann Mary Smith, 93

Ann Mary (Martin) Smith, 93, formerly of Arnold, passed away May 11, 2011, at the hospital in Callaway.
Ann was born May 22, 1917, in Wolbach to Robert D. and Mary A. Hansen Martin. She received her education in Wolbach, Greely County and Arnold. Ann worked in the canteen in North Platte during World War II.
Ann was united in marriage to Hal B. Smith July 4, 1935, in Arnold. The couple made their home in Kearney and then in Arnold, where she was employed by the movie theater and sold Avon for 51 years. They also lived in Logan County on the Garfield Table.

Ronald Olsen, 51

Ronald Claydean (Curl) Olsen was born in Broken Bow, July 22, 1959, to Betty Lou Eacker Olsen, and Clayton E'Dean (Curl) Olsen (deceased prior to his birth). Ron spent a part of his youth raised on several farms in rural Custer County; Anselmo, Merna, Victoria Springs area, with his mom, step-father Robert Taft George, sister Mary Janet George, and brother "Kenny" Kenneth William George. Early training made him a dedicated, dependable hard worker. Ron helped in the family’s dairy operation and daily farm chores.

Cathern Wood, 81

Cathern Lorene Nevada (Clark) Wood, 81, of Mason City, died May 14, 2011, at Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
She was born April 7, 1930, at Culloden, W.V. to Newton Ivory and Garnet (Beckett) Clark. Cathern attended school at Lexington and during her working years she worked at Sperry New Holland, the Lexington Hospital and the Cozad Hospital.

Cecil (Pete) Patterson, 85

Cecil (Pete) Patterson passed away at 5:20 a.m. April 25, 2011. He was born in a sod house in Custer County June 22, 1925, to Claude and Clara (Lund) Patterson.
Cecil attended Ansley High School and Kearney State College. He was a four-sport athlete in high school and college.
He was married to Kathleen Skeen, and the couple farmed in Custer County for several years. In 1951, they moved to Idaho where they continued to farm.

Area schools qualify 56 for State Track Championships

Ten area schools will send 56 athletes to the 2011 NSAA State Track and Field Champ-ionships this weekend. The first session at the state meet begins with Classes C and A at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning at Omaha Burke Stadium.
Four South Loup Bobcats will kick off the action for area participants in Class C, they are Kali Blevins, Logan Glendy, Kyle Pierce and Brady Weinman.
The other 52 qualifiers will begin their quest to earn state medals tomorrow afternoon with Classes D and B events scheduled to begin at approximately 3 p.m.

Phyllis McClintock, 90

Phyllis I. McClintock, 90, of Wilmore, Kent., passed away Friday, May 6, 2011. She was a retired cafeteria manager for Jessamine County Public Schools, and a member of The Evangelical Church.
She is preceded in death by her parents, the late Fenton and Vesta McEwen of Westerville; two sisters, Phylbert McEwen Scott and Ruby McEwen Thomas; two brothers-in-law, Ed Scott and Bill Dizney.

John E. Peterson, 87

John E. Petersen, age 87 of Westerville, parted this world May 8, 2011, at the Arbor Manor in Fremont. Funeral services will be Friday, May 13, at 10:30 a.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with Rolen Sell officiating.
Burial will be in the Westerville Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be Thursday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the family greeting friends 6-7 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. Memorials have been established to the American Legion Club in Ansley or Arcadia.

Norma Cornelison, 90

Norma Louise (Drake) Cornelison was born Oct. 13, 1920, on a ranch north of Almeria, to James P. and Mary R. (Hess) Drake. She went to meet her Savior May 3, 2011.
She attended school at Knobby Ridge, spending most of her younger adult life in the Taylor-Sargent area. She was active in the Assembly of God church in Taylor where she played the piano. She then moved to Oregon where she met and married Ivan Henry (Hank) Cornelison in 1960.
