Last Friday was Arbor Day, and in celebration of the Nebraska-founded holiday Tim Schaaf and Sarah Winslow of the Natural Resources Conservation District paid a visit to Broken Bow first graders.
On one of the rare warm, sunny days our region has enjoyed recently, the first grade students at North Park elementary gathered outside as Mr. Schaaf presented a quick lesson on plants and soils. The students then gathered in front of the school and watched excitedly as Schaaf dug holes to plant two new trees on the property.
An April 26 vehicle accident near Sargent has led to the arrest of a Sargent man. Ronald J.Vincent, 49, was driving his 1994 red Ford pickup when he lost control and went through a fence before hitting an embankment. The accident occurred approximately 2 1/2 miles west and 1 1/2 miles north of Sargent at 7:15 p.m.
ARNOLD - - Arnold Public Schools' teacher Nicole Badgley has been named the 2011 Great Plains Communications Outstanding Teacher of the Year.
During her tenure, Badgley helped in the planning, developing and maintaining one of the first 1:1 laptop initiatives for small schools in Nebraska. Due to her efforts, beginning in 2006, all students in 9-12 grades received their own laptops. Eventually, the program was expanded for students K-12.
BROKEN BOW -- The Custer County Invite was a preview of the talent that will be participating at the Loup Valley Conference tournament today in Burwell. Seven of the LVC teams competed in the Custer County Invite and the team races were just as close as the individual races. In the boys division, the South Loup Bobcats, who scored 161 points, were two points better than the second place Sargent Bulldogs. Ansley won the race for third as third through fifth place teams were separated by two and a half points.
BROKEN BOW -- The Broken Bow Indian golf team was victorious last Friday winning their home invite at the Broken Bow Country Club. The Indians shot a team low score of 339 which was 10 strokes better than second place Minden.
Three Indian golfers landed among the Top 10 individuals. Tanner Johnson finished in second place after carding a 79. He was followed closely by Marcus Miller who turned in an 80 score. Nate Hanson also finished in the Top 10 at sixth place shooting an 85. Kyle Mayor finished out the scoring for the Indians with a 95.

ARNOLD -- The Mullen Bronco boys team won the Sandhills Conference crown last Thursday scoring 156 points with Brady coming in second with 123. In the girls division, Brady won the conference title with 133 points while the Lady Broncos finished as the runner-up with 122 points.
GOTHENBURG -- The Broken Bow Indians 4x400 meter relay team along with Cody Dierking were Southwest Conference champions Saturday in Gothenburg. The two gold medals led the Indians to a third place finish in the boys division. Gothenburg won the conference title with Cozad finishing second. In the girls division, Cozad claimed the team title with the Lady Indians finishing fifth.
Thousands of people gathered around the White House, Times Square and Ground Zero throughout last night and into today in jubilation as U.S. President Barack Obama announced to the world that American forces had infiltrated a compound in Pakistan and killed the most wanted man in the world - Osama Bin Laden.

Gardening has been a part of Merilee Johnson's life for as long as she can remember. However, she has not always had a fondness for it.
Merilee grew up on a dairy farm west of Arcadia. Her parents always grew a big garden and a big patch of sweet corn, and it was the kids' responsibility to help take care of it.
"I really didn't enjoy gardening all that much then," Merilee smiles, as she reflects on her childhood experience.
The Custer Co. Area APA Pool Leagues are now accepting team registrations for the upcoming Summer Session.
Registration deadline is Thursday, May 5th. Play begins in May and runs through August.
APA Pool Leagues that are available include Monday Open 8-Ball and Thursday Open 9-Ball. Other formats include Masters (no handicap), Ladies 8-Ball and Family 8-Ball (no age limit).
