STATE CHAMPIONS!!!

The Broken Bow High School cheerleading squad brought home the state championship trophy following Saturday's State High Cheer & Dance Championships in Grand Island. Broken Bow was crowned state champs in the Class C Sideline Division. Members of the squad are Emily Smallcomb, Nicole Evans, Ashly Raff, Nathan Geranis, Shamra Fritsch, Shelby Allen, Bridget Behrends, Neleigh Hall, Sami Gaston and Emilee Franssen.

Fifteen area wrestlers remain in contention for medal

February 19, 2011

Fifteen area wrestlers will compete for a medal Saturday with two wrestling for the state championship in their weight class. Sargent/Burwell's Jed Fenske (145) and SEM's Traven Claflin (160) will wrestle for the gold medal in the championship round beginning at 2:30 this afternoon.
Area wrestlers who will compete for the 3rd place medal will be Ansley/Arcadia's Ryan Hircock (189); Mullen's Jared Simonson (130) and Nick Licking (189); South Loup's Logan Glendy (145) and SEM's John Frerichs (145).

Fourteen area wrestlers advance through the first, second rounds of consolations

Fourteen area wrestlers will continue through the State tournament, which resumes at 5 p.m. today, after surviving the first and second round consolation matches earlier today. Four of those wrestlers are from Sargent/Burwell, they are Evan Gideon (103), Kirby Pomplun (119), Grady McIntosh (125) and Brett Mauler (160). Their wins today pushed Sargent/Burwell in the lead in the team standings, just four points ahead of Wood River. Seven of the nine Sargent/Burwell qualifiers are still in contention for a medal.

BREAKING NEWS: Cold case murder suspect arrested in Bow

Broken Bow Police Department assisted investigators from Grand Rapids, Mich. this week in an investigation that led to the arrest of Robert L. (Bobby) Brown, 38, for the fatal shooting of an 8-year-old girl at Grand Rapids in 1993, according to Broken Bow Police Chief Steve Scott.

Lady Warriors advance play for district title, trip to State

The Ansley Lady Warriors escaped a close game against the upset minded North Loup-Scotia Wildcats 43-39. The Lady Warrior advance to the D2-4 district final for a match-up with Wilcox-Hildreth who was a 64-52 winner over Loomis.
In other girls subdistrict action last night, the Sandhills/Thedford Lady Knights season came to an end with a 46-31 loss to Sutherland in the D1-11 subdistrict. The season also ended for the Mullen Lady Broncos who lost to Cody-Kilgore 35-32 in the D2-11 subdistrict.

Three Sargent/Burwell wrestlers advance to Class C championship semifinals

The Sargent/Burwell Horndogs had three wrestlers advance to the championship semifinals to guarantee themselves a medal. The Horndogs also sit in second place in the team standings just four points behind Wood River after the first two rounds of competition. The three wrestlers who advanced to the championship semifinals are Justin Miller (112), Jed Fenske (145) and Tanner Balfour (152).

Bow Council says: Number Up!

Come June 1, every building, from residences to businesses will have to have a building number posted, and visible from the street.
Ordinance 1095 will require the posting of address numbers on buildings. It will be a help for the Utility Department and for Emergency Services.
The numbers are to be on the building, not on the curb. They are to be at least three inches high and two inches wide and made metal or some other durable material.
The Broken Bow City Council passed the ordinance at the Monday noon city council meeting and waved the three readings.

Forty-one area wrestlers walk into the Omaha Qwest Center today for the opening rounds of the State Wrestling Tournament.

Joan Horine, 76

Joan Horine, 76, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at her home in Broken Bow. She was born July 25, 1934, to Joseph and Ingaborg (Fossum) Knoll in Virginia, Minn. She grew up in Minnesota, until her family moved to Santa Monica, Calif., during her junior year of high school. She graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1952.
She married Leroy “Pete” D. Horine, Jr., Dec. 5, 1968, in Minden. They relocated many times over the years, living in California, Nebraska, Color-ado and Arkansas. They settled down in Broken Bow in 1980.
